David Logan (also credited as David Aaron Logan & David A. Logan) is a Canadian composer,[1] producer, and songwriter for video games,[2] films and television. In 1992 he started his music studio David Logan Music, later renamed as Orb Soundwerx in 2014.[3] Logan’s music style spans several genres including video game music, orchestral, rock and electronic.[4]
His music compositions are widely used in Video games as well as television for both advertisements and shows. His popular music composition credits include Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty,[5] X-Men: Mutant Academy, Pac-Man World 2[6] and the re-release of the arcade classic Asteroids. He is also a featured composer for Disney’s live action TV show Ready or Not and has been nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award for his original soundtrack for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty.[7]
Early life and education
Born in Toronto, Canada, on August 27th 1969, Logan’s love for music began in childhood, supported by his family interests. His father was fond of listening to classical music and his mother liked Motown artists and The Beatles. He developed his own taste in music at the age of 11, listening to bands such as Blondie, Elvis Costello and The English Beat. To support his interest, his father bought him a set of drums at the age of 15.
In 1986, David started his music education at Oakwood Collegiate Institute and became an orchestral classical percussionist. He graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy as a performance major and composition minor, in 1990. After Interlochen he was accepted to Berklee College of Music, Boston.[8] He started as a performance major and then transferred to the film scoring department. While at Berklee he won the performance division achievement award and the Soren Christensen Film scoring achievement award. David graduated with honors (magna cum laude) in 1994.[9][10]
Career
After his graduation from Berklee in 1994, Logan started his career with Player’s Music in Toronto as a staff composer and music director.[11] Soon after, he started his first multimedia company M3: Music for Multimedia pioneering early techniques in interactive game composing.[12][13]
In 1996, Logan started working with a writing team for the live action Disney TV show Ready or Not. In 1997, he moved from Toronto to Hollywood, California and started his career as a composer in the video game industry. He has worked with some of the top Video game companies in the world including Activision, Ubisoft, Marvel/Disney, Namco and Sony. He has composed music for more than 100 video games including Valerian: City of Alpha, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty,[14] X-Men: Mutant Academy, Pac-Man World 2,[15][16] Asteroids, Pitfall 3D,[17] NHL Hockey 2K3, Major League Baseball 2002 and Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm. He was also the first composer to compose streaming interactive MIDI music for Sony Playstation and one of the first composers to become a licensed authorized developer for Sony Playstation.
David has also enjoyed a career as a composer for television, for both advertisements and TV shows. Some of his notable works include advertisements like Nike’s 2004 Summer Olympics campaign, TV branding campaigns for ABC Supersize, Shop Channel and Discovery Quest as well as featured music in Sex and the City (HBO), FaceOff (NBC) and Access Hollywood (NBC).[18]
Logan is an award-winning composer of the epic soundtrack for Heroes Over Europe for Ubisoft (PS3, XBox 360, PC) and has been nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award for his original soundtrack for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty.[19][20]
As a producer and songwriter Logan has recorded, produced and co-written songs with several notable artists in the industry including Jimmy Shaw, Liz Rodrigues and Jewel. Recently he has produced a series of albums for the Canadian Singer-Songwriter Pascal Dennis.[21]
In 2016 he moved to Rome, Italy to work on a series of feature films including his original soundtrack for La Guerra dei Cafoni which had its premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2017. His soundtrack for the film ROSA premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2019 where it was nominated for best feature film.[22][23] It also won best feature film at the K3 film festival as well as best screenplay at the Slovenian film festival.[24]
Apart from his successful career as a music composer and producer Logan has also worked with various institutions as a professor. He teaches Masters level music composition and sound design[25] at St. Louis College of Music and Conservatory Santa Cecilia in Rome.[26][27]
