David J Mitchell was born in Glasgow in 1991. He studied sculpture at Glasgow college before earning a Ba Hons degree in Sculpture and Fine Art at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen.[1] [2][3] [4]

Career

David worked as an apprentice for Queens sculptor Alexander Stoddart before embarking on his own career as a figurative sculptor.[5]

He has a particular focus on the human figure and believes the expression of art in this way is an expression of the soul of the artist. “The created object goes from the dead to alive, soulless to living” and that “figurative sculpture is a vessel that contains in part a piece of the artist”.[6] [7]

Davids first major work of art was Rob Roy for Peterculter near Aberdeen where he receiver the commission a year after leaving art school.[8] [9]

Diagnosed with MS in 2017 has given David an increased drive to bring to bear his soul within his Sculptures. Creating high quality work David says is “the clearest expression of this”.

David has further studied sculpture and marble carving throughout Europe closely examining the works by the greatest sculptors to have ever lived. He has exhibited throughout the world but most notably in London.

David can often be seen working closely with notable architects. Relief work, keystone busts and caryatid columns as well as one off large scale figurative work in anything from bronze and marble to terracotta.

David has produced much work for celebrities such as Alan Cumming, Kate Dickie and Muriel Gray, Royalty, business leaders Such as Jim McColl and Governments.[10]

David has also undertaken the restoration of John Mossman statues located at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow as part of the multi million pound restoration.[11] [12][13] [14] [15]

His work can be seen all around the world in from small private collections to public buildings and monuments.
