David S. Humphrey (born June 7, 1973) is an American voice actor, theatre actor, bass singer, and swimming instructor, best known for voicing Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series from 2001 to 2004, before getting replaced by Jason Griffith. Humphrey also does acting in theatre plays along with co-star Ryan Drummond. Humphrey currently works as a bass singer of Vybration.
Career
Humphrey starred (and continues to star) in several theatre musicals and plays such as Forever Plaid and 1776, starring in the latter as Thomas Jefferson and former as Frankie.[1] Humphrey's performance in Forever Plaid was well-received by critics and audiences.[2][3] Humphrey would work with fellow co-star Ryan Drummond, who would later go on to voice Sonic the Hedgehog in the titular video game franchise from 1998 until 2004. Humphrey starred in other theatre productions such as Cotton Patch Gospel in 2003, South Pacific in 2004, The Invention of Love in 2005, Into the Woods and Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings in 2006, and The Secret Garden in 2007.[1]
In 2000, during the production of Sonic Adventure 2, Drummond was approached by the producers to voice Sonic's rival in the game, Shadow the Hedgehog. Drummond declined the role, instead offering it to Humphrey, who would go on to voice Shadow in the game, being released on the Sega Dreamcast on June 19, 2001, although Drummond voiced a few of Shadow's lines when Humphrey was unavailable.[4] Despite Shadow was supposed to stay dead in Sonic Adventure 2, he would later return as a major character in Sonic Battle in 2003, with Humphrey returning to voice him, only voicing grunts and yells. Later that year, Shadow would also return in Sonic Heroes, suffering amnesia after falling down to Earth back in Sonic Adventure 2, teaming up with Rouge and E123-Omega.
In 2003, Humphrey, Drummond, and the voice cast of Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 were not asked to return for the anime TV series Sonic X, for the english 4Kids dub. This was due to the cast not being located in the New York area for the show.[5] Humphrey and Drummond would both replaced by Jason Griffith as Shadow and Sonic, respectively. Despite the recast, Humphrey and Drummond would voice their respective characters in Heroes and would reprise their roles through archival recordings in the 2004 game Sega Superstars, being the last time their voices were used.
Besides voicing Shadow, Humphrey would go on to voice Jack Keane in the titular video game of the same name, and in 2006-2011, voiced Vlad in the Press Start 2 Continue web series and the video game of the same name in 2011. Humphrey returned to the Sonic the Hedgehog series in a fanfic web series Sonic and Tails R in 2021, not reprising his role as Shadow, but instead voicing Knuckles the Echidna in place of his former voice Scott Drier. Humphrey currently works as a bass singer for the cappella sextet Vybration. Humphrey also has a twitter account.
In May 2020, Humphrey recorded a video of him singing the song, Where's the Girl, on the Lamb's Player Theatre channel.[6]
Personal life
Humphrey was born on June 7, 1973 and raised in Wyoming, NY. When he was six years old, he entered swimming competitions and continued doing so until high school, where at 16, he became a lifeguard. Humphrey started teaching swim lessons and life guarding. At 25 years old, he moved to San Diego in 1998.[7] He has two children.
