David Goldschlag is an American computer scientist, entrepreneur, and CEO, widely recognized for his pioneering contributions to the field of cybersecurity. He is best known as the co-inventor of Onion routing, the foundational technology behind the Tor (The Onion Router) network, which enables anonymous communication over the internet. Goldschlag is currently the co-founder and CEO of Aembit, a company specializing in non-human workload identity and access management (IAM).

Career

Following a stint at the National Security Agency (NSA), Goldschlag joined the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in 1993 as a Computer Scientist, where he served until 1997. During his time at NRL, Goldschlag, along with Paul Syverson and Michael Reed, co-invented Onion Routing.[1], the principal technology behind the Tor (The Onion Router) network. Tor was designed to protect online privacy and anonymity by enabling anonymous communication over the internet. Tor has since become one of the most widely used tools for secure and anonymous communication.

After NRL, Goldschlag held various technology leadership roles, including president and CTO of Trust Digital, an early innovator in mobile device management, which was acquired by McAfee. Goldschlag served as McAfee’s Vice President of Mobile, developing enterprise and consumer mobile security solutions.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

MobileSpaces

In 2011, Goldschlag co-founded MobileSpaces, one of the first companies to address the BYOD (bring your own device) challenges in the workplace. The company was later acquired by Pulse Secure, where Goldschlag served as senior VP of Strategy and Chief Technology Officer.

New Edge Labs

In 2017, Goldschlag co-founded New Edge Labs, provider of Zero Trust user network access solutions. New Edge Labs was later acquired by Netskope, where Goldschlag transitioned to the role of Vice President.

Aembit

Since 2021, Goldschlag has been co-founder and CEO of Aembit, a workload IAM company that focuses on securing access between non-human workloads and service accounts across cloud and on-premises environments. Under his leadership, Aembit has gained recognition in the cybersecurity industry for its innovative approach to managing and securing NHIs, including a runner-up finish at the 2024 RSA Conference Innovation Sandbox competition[2]

Goldschlag earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science at Wayne State University and doctorate in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin
