David Evans Shaw is an American entrepreneur, investor and activist. He is the founder and CEO of Black Point Group and founder of IDEXX Laboratories in Maine. In a 2021 article, the Portland Press Herald described him as[1] Shaw is also known for his public service, as well as his support of the arts and environmental stewardship[2]

Personal Life

David Evans Shaw was born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1951. He was married to Marjorie Babine and subsequently to actress Glenn Close. He lives in Scarborough, Maine.

Education

Shaw attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1973.[3] He earned his MBA from the University of Southern Maine[4] in 1976.

Early Career

He began his career in public service, working in Maine Governor James B. Longley’s administration and then realized he preferred the world of business.[5] He then helped to build a Boston-based consulting firm specializing in food and agriculture[4] called Agribusiness Associates.

Entrepreneurial Career

David Shaw founded IDEXX Laboratories in 1983, and served as CEO and Chair until 2002.[6] IDEXX is a publicly traded leading animal health diagnostics company with revenues of $3.3B in 2022.[7] David co-founded Vets First Choice in 2010 and served as Chair when Vets First Choice merged with Henry Schein Animal Health in 2018 to become Covetrus.[8] David Shaw was also the founding CEO and Chair of Ikaria Holdings, a human pharmaceutical company. Previously Shaw served as a partner at the venture capital firm: Venrock.[9]

Advisory Board Experience

Shaw has served on the advisory board of Nautilus Quarterly,[10] WaterBear Network,[11] Arctaris Impact Investors,[12] Just Capital,[13] Saildrone,[14] Running Tide, Leerink,[15] Polaris Partners.

Public Service

His career has included public service in science, arts, conservation and public policy. He was chairman of the board at Jackson Laboratory,[5] treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), was a trustee of the National Park Foundation, founded the Second Century Stewardship Program for America's National Parks,[16] is a founding trustee of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum,[17] founder of the David E Shaw & family Sculpture Park at the Portland Museum of Art,[18] and is on the advisory council of Sustainable Harvest International.[19]

He was a founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, is a Patron of Nature at the International Union for Conservation of Nature,[20] and a member of Ocean Elders.[21]

In 2021, David founded the Shaw Innovation Explorers Program at the University of New Hampshire, an entrepreneurial student fellowship program.[22] In that year he founded similar programs at the University of Southern Maine[23] and the University of New England, the Shaw Innovation Fellow Program.[24]
