David Franklin Cavell (born March 3, 1984) is an American lawyer, former Democratic speechwriter, and candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Massachusetts's 4th congressional district.[1] He served as a Presidential Speechwriter for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in the White House from 2015 to 2017, as well as Senior Advisor and Assistant Attorney General for Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey from 2017 to 2019.[2]

Career

Cavell was a 4th grade public school teacher in the South Bronx, New York, from 2006 to 2007.[3] He later worked as Deputy Director of New Media and Deputy Speechwriter for Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick from 2007 to 2010.[4] After attending law school at Georgetown University, he served as a Presidential Speechwriter in the Obama White House, where he wrote speeches for the First Lady and the President.[5] In February 2017, he began serving as Senior Advisor and an Assistant Attorney General for Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey.[6]

2019 Congressional run

Cavell is a candidate for the 4th district congressional seat currently held by Congressman Joe Kennedy III.[7]

Personal life

Cavell grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. His father, Stanley Cavell was a philosopher and author. His mother is Cathleen Cavell, a progressive activist and lawyer. He has two siblings: his brother Benjamin Cavell is an American television writer and producer, and his half-sister Rachel Cavell is a lawyer and professor in New York. He attended Tufts University, where he met his wife Kate Cavell.[8] He is of Eastern European Jewish descent.
