Dave Rich is an American musician and songwriter known for his contributions to indie rock and surf in Northeast Ohio. Born in Oklahoma, Rich relocated to Akron, Ohio at a young age, where he has maintained an active presence in the Northeast Ohio music scene for several decades.
Musical Career
Early Work and Houseguest (1990s–2008)
During his high school years, Rich co-founded the band Intelligent Knives, which performed at local venues throughout the region. The group subsequently evolved into Houseguest, which became a prominent act within Northeast Ohio's independent music scene.
Houseguest signed to Audio Eagle Records, a label co-owned by Patrick Carney of the Grammy Award-winning duo The Black Keys. Houseguest performed at notable regional venues including the Lime Spider, Thursday's, the Agora, and the Beachland Ballroom, and appeared at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame outdoor festival in Cleveland.
The ensemble, which included Steve Clements, Ted Mallison, Gabe Schray, and Dave Whited, drew musical influences from artists ranging from Led Zeppelin to Guided by Voices. Between 2003 and 2008, Houseguest released three studio albums: Talking Time, High Strangeness, and Welcome, All That's Difficult. The band toured regionally, performing in cities including New York and Nashville.
The Beyonderers (2015–2024)
In 2015, Rich founded The Beyonderers, an instrumental surf rock band influenced by guitarist Dick Dale. The group's lineup featured Anne Lillis on drums (later of The Surfrajettes) and Andrew Rich on bass. The band later opened for Dick Dale at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights on August 5th, 2015. Music critics have characterized Rich's guitar technique as an "adrenalized, thrash-metal infused version of third-wave surf music," noted for its aggressive playing style and rhythmic intensity.
The Beyonderers developed a distinctive stage presence, performing in costumes and helmets while incorporating extraterrestrial and UFO-related themes into their song titles and visual presentation. Over nine years, the band released four albums: Fourth Wave, Disclosure, Live in Akron, and Estimate of the Situation.
Dave Rich and His Enablers (2023–present)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rich began extensive independent recording. Upon the resumption of live performances, he formed Dave Rich and His Enablers to perform this material. The founding lineup included author and bassist Dave Giffels, drummer Chris Butler (formerly of The Waitresses), and guitarist Mike "Friday Mike" Wilkinson. Between 2023 and 2025, Rich composed and produced eight albums: Strategic Laments + Baseball, Lethargic Bark, I Don't Know Why Anyone Does Anything, Great Uncles Heat Signature, Headless By Any Measure, Fumblers Archive, Phantom in a Bucket, and Secondary Postcard Market.

Rich holds a Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Akron and has worked in the nonprofit sector for numerous years.
