Darryl Mitteldorf established Malecare, an organization that provides support and advocacy for men with cancer following his father's prostate cancer diagnosis in 1997. Before this, Mr. Mitteldorf had worked as a social worker for refugee resettlement in Europe but left his career to focus on his father's condition.

Darryl Mitteldorf noticed similarities between the community his father and he joined and the refugees he had helped in the past. He saw that his father was having trouble adjusting, just like the refugees he had assisted. Using methods he had developed for helping African refugees adjust to life in Europe, Darryl Mitteldorf created a support group for men with cancer.

As the support group expanded and diversified, specialized subgroups, including those for gay men, started holding regular meetings. This marked the beginning of Darryl Mitteldorf's pioneering work in LGBT psycho-oncology. When the group's initial sponsor declined to invest in support services for gay men, Mr. Mitteldorf officially founded Malecare as an organization focused on assisting underserved men with cancer from all communities and advocating for their rights and needs. Stemming from its work with cancer patients, Malecare also facilitates one of the world's largest online communities for anxiety sufferers, with over 51,000 active members.

The expansion of Malecare's support groups and staff allowed for innovation and the development of services that improved the lives and well-being of thousands of people. Today, patient advocacy organizations worldwide use modalities first developed at Malecare.

Sadly, Mr. Mitteldorf's father passed away from cancer in 2005. That same year, Darryl Mitteldorf founded The National LGBT Cancer Project, a first-of-its-kind support and advocacy organization addressing the specific needs and challenges of LGBTQ cancer patients. He has devoted his career to honoring his father's memory through these organizations and numerous other initiatives aimed at helping all people affected by cancer.

Darryl Mitteldorf is also a driven inventor. He holds two patents for medical devices, including a nuclear medicine device. He has another patent pending on the CancerGraph app algorithm for iOS and Android devices. He has authored around 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and eight book chapters and is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded researcher.

Mr. Mitteldorf earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, a Master of Science in Management (now called a Master of Public Administration), and a Master of Social Work from New York University.
