Darjan Hil is an Austrian information designer, educator, and book author based in Basel, Switzerland. He is known for creating visualizations that make complex issues easier to understand. His works cover various specific domains such as data visualization, data storytelling, knowledge mapping, information architecture and Digitization strategies. He focuses on developing both physical and digital experiences that improve human understanding through interactions.

As co-author of the book Visualizing Complexity: Modular Information Design Handbook..[1][2][3], he explores new ways with multidimensional visualisation through a modular system of 80 elements. The book has been awarded with the Austrian Joseph Binder Award[4], the ICMA Award [4], the Deutsche Presse Agentur Award [5], the German Art Directors Club [6], the INDIGO Award [7], as-well as longlisted at the European Design Award, the Information is Beautiful Award [8] and nominated for the Swiss Design Award 2023 [9].

In 2011 Hil co-founded Superdot formerly YAAY [10] together with Nicole Lachenmeier. Their work has been among others awarded with the Information is Beautiful award for the work for Swiss Post [11], The Out of Balance Award from Stiftung Bauhaus for the depiction of the income gap [12] and the Deutsche Presse Agentur Award for the visualisation of the concept of sufficency[13]. Their collaborations include clients ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies, international organizations, museums, foundations, and universities. A selection of their customers are UNICEF [14], Swiss Federal Statistical Office [15], Roche Pharma AG [16], United Nations UNECE [17], Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture [18], City of Basel [19] and Swiss Post [20]

Hil also teaches classes at various institutions including BA Data Design at Art at Luzern[21], BA Digital Ideation at HSLU [22], MA Design at HSLU [23], CAS Data Visualizaiton at HKB [24], Modular Information Design at various Swiss and international Universities. He has served as speaker at several conferences such as EDCH Munich[25], On Data And Design [26], ISVIS Tel Aviv [27], Keynote at 2co Sardinia[28]. There are podcasts interviews with Darjan Hil at This is HCD [29], Nodes of Design[30]. Hil is part of jury SDGviz Awards [31] and IIID Award 2023 [32]

Aside from his career in academia and design, Hil initiated a event series called On Data And Design [33] in 2018. Starting with a first lecture series in Vienna on the topics between data and design the format grew bigger expanding to Basel and Berlin. Today the events are hosting world known speakers and streamed over youtube to a big community of information design lovers.
