Dario Wolos (born April 8, 1977)[citation needed] is a Mexican-American entrepreneur in the hospitality and packaged goods industries, with an emphasis on taco culture.

Early life

Born to Mexican and Ukrainian parents in Elmira, NY, Wolos was named after his maternal grandfather, Juan Darío, but his parents anglicized the name to John Daryl, until later in life[1]. Dario was raised in Monterrey, Mexico, his mother’s hometown, and he has said that growing up in a Mexican household gave him first hand experience of the passion that goes into Mexican cuisine[2].

Education and career

Wolos attended Cornell University, which is where he says he first realized an opportunity to share a perspective on Mexico that wasn’t known yet around the world[3].

In 2005 at age 28, Wolos returned to Mexico to launch Tacombi in the beach town of Playa del Carmen.[4] In 2010, he moved the business to New York City, introducing Tacombi as limited service taqueria restaurant in downtown Manhattan[5].

In 2015, Wolos expanded the Tacombi house of brands with Vista Hermosa, a CPG brand of Tortilla|tortillas produced using corn that is 100% nixtamalized[6]. Vista Hermosa has since expanded to include corn and flour tortillas, Totopos (tortilla chips), and frozen burritos, sold in Tacombi taquerias and in over 2,000 retail stores[7]

In December 2021, Tacombi raised $27.5M[8] and gained support from restaurateur Danny Meyer of Shake Shack. The raise has been used to spur growth in Vista Hermosa’s CPG business[9] as well as the expansion to 21 taquerias across the United States, in New York City, Long Island, Miami, the greater Washington, D.C. area, Connecticut and Chicago. Wolos estimates there will be 75 Tacombi locations[10] within the next five years.

Activism

In 2019,Wolos launched The Tacombi Foundation, a certified certified 501(c)3 charitable organization with a mission to advance Mexican communities through education and food accessibility. Through the foundation, Tacombi facilitates local work training programs providing restaurant industry skills and human skills that transfer and endure beyond Tacombi[11].

In 2020, Tacombi Community Kitchen was created through Tacombi Foundation to specifically address food deserts and support families hit by the COVID-19 crisis[12]. Tacombi Community Kitchen partners with Lyft to deliver 6,000 meals a week to neighborhoods in need, over 500,000 meals to date[13].

In 2023, Wolos was nominated by the Consulate General of Mexico in New York for the 2023 Ohtli Award given by the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (Mexico). This is one of the highest recognitions that the Mexican government gives to Mexicans living abroad.[citation needed]
