Darcy Lewis is a fictional character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise portrayed by actress Kat Dennings. She is an original character created for the film Thor (2011), and subsequently becoming a recurring comic relief character in the MCU. She is portrayed as a scientist and an associate of Jane Foster and Erik Selvig. The humorous portrayal of the character has been polarized by critics. The character has appeared in the films Thor, Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), as well as the Disney+ series WandaVision and What If...? (both 2021).

Creation and casting

In November 2009, Natalie Portman, who portrays Jane Foster in the MCU, revealed that Kat Dennings would be involved in Thor, portraying Darcy, a coworker of Portman's Jane Foster,[1] and by August 2012 Dennings was revealed to be reprising her role from the film in Thor: The Dark World.[2] In August 2019, Dennings was revealed to be reprising her role of Darcy in WandaVision, along with the reveal that Randall Park would return as Jimmy Woo in the series and Kathryn Hahn's casting.[3]

Characterization

Her role in the film Thor: The Dark World was expanded from the comic relief sidekick role she played in the first Thor film.[2] Dennings said her character is "really bad at real science in this first movie. In the second movie, she's more interested, but she still doesn't know anything about it. She loves Jane, she really wants Jane and Thor to be together. It's almost like her own little soap opera that she watches."[4] Returning to the role for the first time since Thor: The Dark World in WandaVision, Dennings felt Lewis would not have changed much as a person, but would be older and wiser after going to school to receive her doctorate in astrophysics. Additionally, Dennings felt the character has more confidence in herself now that she is viewed as "the boss" which she never was in the films.[5]

Reception

Darcy's humor has praised by several critics.[6] Dennings' performance in the first Thor was criticized by Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times, calling her "unimpressive".[7] Others have called her the worst character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[8]
