Daniel Robert O'Neill (born January 29, 1986) is a former minor league professional American football player..[1]& current high school football coach [2]. He was also a standout Track & Field sprinter & jumper in high school, boasting an unprecedented 78-0 regular season record in individual running events & winning 12 individual District & Conference Championships.[3] He was featured in a two page spread in the June 07, 2004 issue of Sports Illustrated due to a shocking defeat in the finals of the Iowa Class 1A 200m dash after sustaining an injury and falling to the track [4]
Early life
O'Neill grew up on a corn & soybean farm in the tiny town of Hancock, IA & attended AHSTW High School where he still holds multiple athletic records. He played football collegiately at Northland Community & Technical College & The University of Minnesota Crookston. He spent most of his career playing Cornerback.[5].
College career
Upon completion of his college career he was invited to the CFL combine. Measuring in at 6'3" and weighing 238 lbs., he clocked an event best 4.37 second 40 yard dash time and recorded a 36.5" vertical leap. He also bench pressed 225 lbs. 13 times.
Professional career
Due to his performance in front of CFL scouts, O'Neill was rewarded with a futures contract from the league but opted to try his luck at Professional Indoor Football rather than wait for the opportunity. He played professionally for The Iowa Blackhawks of the American Professional Football League where he was part of an APFL Championship Team in 2009, The La Crosse Spartans of the Indoor Football League, and the Arctic Predators of the American Indoor Football Association. During his time with The Arctic Predators, O'Neill was named the franchises most popular players in a fan vote.[6] [7]
Personal life
O'Neill retired from professional athletics in 2011 and began coaching football at Wasilla High School in Wasilla, AK. He was named Defensive Coordinator for the program in his first season and held the title since.[8]
