Daniel Proietto (born on April 6, 1981 in Rio Nergro, Argentina) is an award winning dancer, choreographer, director and writer. His crossover creations of dance, theater and film are presented and produced by renowned dance companies worldwide.

Life and career

Proietto began dancing at age 9 in Buenos Aires, under the guidance of the late ballet master Wasil Tupin. A few months later he joined the High Institute of the Arts of the Colon Theater, where he was educated as a classical ballet dancer.[1]

He started his professional career at age 16 with the Ballet de Santiago, Chile and later joined Ballet del Teatro Argentino, Ballet Contemporáneo del Teatro San Martín and Carte Blanche - the Norwegian National Dance Company, where he became one of its most outstanding dancers.[2]

In 2013 the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet created the position of "Guest Artist" for Proietto, one of the first occasions in which a contemporary dancer is granted such status with a ballet company.[3]

He is a founding member of Alan Lucien Øyen’s company Winter Guests and have co-created numerous works with him, including commissions for Gothenburg Opera, Paris Opera Ballet and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.[4]

As an independent artist and choreographer Proietto toured venues such as New York City Center, BAM, National Theater of Chaillot, Tokyo’s Bunkamura and Bunka Kaikan, Barcelona’s Teatro Nacional and Mercat de les Flors, Singapore’s Esplanade, Monaco’s Forum, London’s Sadler's Wells and Coliseum, to name a few.[2] He has, also, been invited to international galas and festivals, like Japan’s World Ballet Festival, where he danced alongside Aurelie Dupont, artistic director of Paris Opera Ballet.

He received the 1st Prize in the “International Choreographers Competition" in Hannover for his choreographic debut[2] and since, he has created for Vienna State Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba and Ballet Flanders. WIth them he created RASA - a 3 act dance, theater and musical work for the company's 50th anniversary season[5]. RASA was nominated as one of the Best Productions of the year by Dance Europe and to the Fedora Van Cleef & Arpels Prize.[6]

For his work Cygne he received the Mention of Honor in the Book of the Teatro Alicia Alonso in La Habana. The work, alongside Proietto's interpretation of Øyen’s Petrushka, are featured in the 3D film "Cathedrals of Culture'' produced by Wim Wenders and is permanently showcased by NOWNESS.

Russel Maliphant’s internationally acclaimed solo AfterLight (2009), made for Proietto was nominated for the ”Olivier Award” [2]and with a retrospective of Maliphant received the South Bank Sky Arts Award. For his interpretation Proietto won the UK Critics Award for "Best Male Dancer"[7] and "Best dancer of the year" by Dance Europe, ranking 1st among 170 international stars.[4]

His solo “Sinnerman” by Alan Lucien Oeyen, received great international success and was filmed by legendary fashion photographer Nick Knight, the work is featured at SHOWStudio.[8] He also danced on a film by Knight made for Nicola Formichetti 's first Diesel show, in Venice.

Proietto has worked with some of the greatest contemporary choreographers, including Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, Alexander Ekman, Omar Saravia, Robyn Orlin and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui[9]. Staging the work of the latter and premiering his duet Faun in the US. For this performance Proietto won the ApuliArte Award in Italy.[2].Also with Cherkaoui Proietto created the work TeZukA in Tokyo, about the life of the visionary of manga Osamu Tezuka. The play, produced by Tokyo’s Bunkamura and many other theaters, was televised by the TV channel WOWOW in Japan.

Since 2011 Proietto has studied Kabuki with the prestigious Soke Fujima-ryu. Kanjuro Fujima VIII, one of the most important Kabuki choreographers and directors today, created a work especially for him in 2016. The piece Natsue was premiered as the second act of Øyen’s Simulacrum, a duet for Proietto and japanese flamenco legend Shoji Kojima.[10]

In 2020, Proietto wrote and directed REALNESS, his first film project, produced by Nagelhus Schia Productions and M12 Kultur.[10]
