Daniel Bédard (born September 19, 1957) is a Franco-Canadian musician, composer, arranger, record producer, and audio engineer.[1]

Early years and education

The product of a musical family, Bédard grew up in Greater Sudbury Urban neighbourhoods of Sudbury, debuting at 14 as a singer and guitarist-pianist. While a full-time musician, he attended the music programs at Cambrian College (1975–1977) and Laurentian University, from which he graduated in 1987.

Career

Composer, director, musical director, musician, arranger, professor at Laurentian University and...street philosopher at times, he approaches each project with the curiosity of a child and the rigor of one who is constantly on the lookout for search for new expressions/forms that participate in the message conveyed by the verses of a poet, the words of a performer, the canvas of a painter, the vision of a playwright or the images of a filmmaker.

As a composer, Bédard has written soundscapes and music for multimedia installations, theatre, film, radio, podcasts, television, poetry, and visual arts, as well as electroacoustic works. His most extensive multimedia collaboration has been with the production team at Science North in Sudbury, although he has worked with a number of institutions in Canada and the US.[3] His closest association in terms of theatre has been with the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, while in film he has in recent years worked with Next Phase Motion Pictures.

Bédard performs in local Sudbury groups and at festivals such as Northern Lights Festival Boréal and La Nuit sur l'étang, including as music director. He has shared the stage and worked in various capacities on albums with Franco-Ontarian musicians such as Stéphane Paquette|Stef Paquette. Cage, an electroacoustic band named after composer John Cage, is headed by Bédard.[4] From 2001-15, he was music director of the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards.

Bédard toured nationally with the troubadour, Pierre Germain, as musician and arranger for the children's album, Pierre et le Papillon.[5] In 1996, he toured Chile and Argentina as a member of Music of the Americas, the first North American band to play at the Trabún Festival in San Martín de los Andes. As music director, he toured Ontario with the singer and guitarist, Mauricio Montecinos.

He has collaborated with the poets Patrice Desbiens, Robert Dickson (writer)|Robert Dickson, and Michel Dallaire,[6] the photographer and poet, Mary Green,[7] and the visual artist, Michel Galipeau. A memorial concert for Galipeau was organized by Bédard, for which he also wrote the music.[8]

The hymn, Levons Nos Voix, was arranged and produced by Bédard for the Franco-Ontarian group, Big Balade, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Francophone presence in Ontario.[9] He also wrote the opening music for the 10th annual Franco-Ontarian Games.

From 1988-2009, Bédard taught electronic music, composition and music theory as a part-time member of the music faculty at Laurentian University.[10]

Awards

Bédard is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including Order of La Pléiade from the Ontario section of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie,[11] Prix Hommage from the Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique (APCM),[12][13], and the Yorkton Film Festival's Golden Sheaf. He also has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Sudbury Mayor's annual celebration of the arts[14][15] and the Jackie Washington Award from the Northern Lights Festival Boréal. He is a three-time winner of the APCM's Trille Or for best score as well as other awards, including from the Themed Entertainment Association, as noted under Works.
