Dan V. Nicolau, Jr. is a Romanian-Australian mathematician, physician and engineer.[1] He is Associate Professor of Mathematics at the Queensland University of Technology and a Future Fellow of the Australian Research Council.[2]

Education

Nicolau holds six university degrees, including in mathematics, engineering and medicine. He completed a DPhil at Balliol College, Oxford under the supervision of Philip Maini FRS and his medical degree from Green Templeton College, Oxford.[3] He went on to a Miller Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley between 2008 and 2011 in the laboratory of M. A. R. Koehl.[4]

Research and career

Nicolau is credited with pioneering the emerging field of networks-based biocomputation that use biological agents instead of digital signals to perform complex computational tasks.[5] His approach led to the design and implementation of a biological computer that could solve the subset sum problem within a polinnomial time bound, thus creating a new computing paradigm to solve NL-complete problems effectivelly and efficiently.[6] He is also known for his work on using mathematics to understand complex biological systems by constructing computational models of mechanisms underlying protein-protein interactions on the plasma memberance and bacterial flagellar switch's coordination.[7][8] Early in the COVID-19 pademic outbreak, Nicolau constructed an epidemiological model of pandemic progression.[9][10] His research on COVID-19 also led to proposed cost-effective preventative treatments within clinical trials aimed at stopping hyperinflammation through the use of inhaled corticosteroid and budesonide. [11] Nicolau was co-founder and CEO of Altitude Medical, Inc[12].
