Dan Dare (born 3rd September 1988) is a multi-platinum British songwriter and record producer. His writing and production credits include Marina & The Diamonds, Charli XCX, MNEK, Selah Sue, Gavin James, Wiley, Giggs, WSTRN, Juelz Santana, Mario, Dillion Francis, Joel Corry, Becky Hill, Newton Faulkner to name a few.
Early life
Located on the sprawling outskirts of suburban west London, late-nineties Southall has innately informed the perspective of producer, songwriter and musician Dan Dare. Its multiculturalism provided a backdrop which allowed a surfeit of influences to simmer into his musical outlook, yet it was an undeniable tough town which suffered from a heroin epidemic that blighted the potential of its youth. Whilst growing up on the infamous Golf Links Estate off the Greenford Road/Uxbridge Road. Dan's circuitous journey commenced as a part of the initial wave of Grime during his time with the Gritty Committee collective and their sets at the pirate station Freeze 92.7, but ultimately he was one of the few of his contemporaries not to end up in prison. Dare then stepped from the underground scene and into the mainstream music industry via a succession of collaborations.
Career
Drifting through musical genre's from urban music to singer-songwriter to mainstream pop, Dan has continued to stay relevant with his eclectic style of writing and production. In 2010 along with hit urban producer ZDOT, they were able to bring rappers from the UK & US gangster rap scene Juelz Santana, Giggs which had rarely been done before with Grime artist Wiley singing the hook the track was entitled 'Bright Lights' which premiered on Tim Westwoods Radio 1 rap show. Dan then began to work with Nick Worthington & Mick Shiner who founded 679 recordings was the brain box behind so many big UK acts including The Streets, Plan B, Rudimental & Example. Nick propelled Dan into a complete different world from pirate radio and making beats on his laptop. He then collaborated & shared a studio with Rudimental & MNEK at Major Toms writing and producing Black Butter artist Syron first releases 'Here' & 'Breaking' via MNEK he met singer Becky Hill with whom he wrote on Drum and Bass favourite Loadstar's album 'I Need The Light' the track was entitled 'Lifeless'.
As Nick Worthington was the MD of 679artists Dare first collaborated with Marina & The Diamonds via Liam Howe doing production on there track Teen Idle & then with Charli XCX on there joint release via Atlantic Records entitled 'Just Desserts' which was another unexpected link up with a forward thinking style of production, he then went on to co-write/co-produce tracks on Irish Pop artist Gavin James album 'Only Ticket Home' which was a number one album in Ireland. He then went onto write and produce track's on english singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner's album's 'Studio Zoo' 'Human Love' & 'Hit The Ground Running' & teaming up with Belgian superstar Selah Sue on albums 'Reason' and 'Persona' whilst still dipping he's toes into the urban scene releasing tracks entitled 'Murder' by Ghetts & ZDOT & 'Take It Off' with WSTRN.
Under the moniker SLANG, Dan signed a record deal with Parlophone in 2017 in which he toured the UK & Europe headlining a stage at V Festival & Lovebox whilst releasing many popular EP's & mixtape's whilst reaching number one on the Spotify Viral charts with his first release 'You Alright Yeah?'. Two EP's and a mixtape swiftly followed which featured guest vocals from the likes of Benny Banks, Ryan Keen, Corey Harper, Kelli-Leigh, Newton Faulkner, Scrufizzer, Aiden Grimshaw & Jordan Stephens.
Since SLANG, Dan teamed up with Australian singer/producer John Courtidis aka YeahBoy. They created the electronic duo KOLIDESCOPES who have gone onto to have great success as writer/producers. First signing to Mike Caren at Atlantic Records in the United States releasing a hand full of tracks via there dance arm Big Beat and then again signing with Parlophone writing tracks with Mabel, Dom Dolla, MK, Sonny Fodera, Dillion Francis, 220Kid, Mario, Sinead Harnett & Theo Hutchcraft.
In July of 2020 Dan & John were responsible for writing the global hit 'Head & Heart' from Joel Corry & MNEK which was originally due for release under there artist project 'KOLIDESCOPES'.
"Head & Heart" reached number one in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2020, after first entering the UK Singles Chart at number fifteen two weeks earlier. It became both Corry and MNEK's first number one in their native country and remained at the top position for six consecutive weeks,[1] and was certified Platinum for exceeding 600,000 units on 11 September 2020.[2] The song went on to spend 71 weeks on the UK Singles Chart and also number one on the Scottish Singles Chart and Irish Singles Chart.[3] It made waves across Europe and the world hitting the number one spot in Belgium, Czech, Denmark, Germany, New Zealand, Hungary, Israel, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia & Sweden whilst no.2 was the height of its success in Australia.
At the APRA Music Awards of 2022, the song won Most Performed Australian Work and Most Performed Dance/Electronic Work.[4]
On 9 December 2022, the song surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify.
SonyATV snapped up Dan Dare on a huge 3 year worldwide publishing deal being one of the major deals for 2020.
