Heather Robinson (born April 17th, 1969) better known by her stage name DJ Heather, is an American DJ, singer, and songwriter. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, she moved to the Chicago area when she was seven years old. She is a resident DJ at Smartbar[1] in Chicago, Illinois.

Biography

DJ Heather started DJing in 1991 at the Artful Dodger[2] in Wicker Park, Chicago. She incorporates a wide variety of genres into her DJ sets including hip-hop, house, jazz, soul, R&B, disco classics, and rare groove.

She became a resident at the house music club Red Dog and was an employee at many record stores and distributors, including Record Exchange (1989-90), Wax Trax! Records[3] (1990-92), Southern Record Distro (1993-94), and Gramaphone Records[4] (1994-98) in the Lakeview neighborhood.

In 1997, DJ Heather co-founded the all-female DJ group Superjane with DJ Colette, DJ Dayhota.[5] DJ Lady D would later join.[6] In that same year, Robinson became the first African-American woman to become a resident of Smartbar.[7] Her residency at the nightclub on Chicago’s Northside is now in its fourth incarnation.

Thus far, she has contributed two DJ mixes to the BBC Essential Mix (2002 and 2003).[8] In 2002, she was the first African American woman to DJ in South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town[9]). That same year, she was the first African American woman named a resident of Fabric Nightclub[10] (London) as well as becoming the first winner of "Breakthrough DJ” at the inaugural DanceStar USA Awards[11] (Miami).

In 2003, Robinson was the first African American woman to mix DJ Mag’s DJ International All Stars mix CD[12] and in 2004 became the first African American woman to DJ mix a compilation album for the Fabric Mix Series with Fabric 21 - DJ Heather.[13]

In 2005, DJ Heather her label and production umbrella with Blackcherry Recordings.[14] In 2006, DJ Heather and DJ Colette released their House Of OM double disc[15] and toured with her to support the commercially released DJ mixed compilation. DJ Heather followed up this release with 2007’s OM Summer Sessions 2[16] with Onionz. She then joined fellow OM Records label artists - Colette, Fred Everything, and Andy Caldwell - on the House of OM tour throughout North America that same year.

DJ Heather was featured on the Boiler Room broadcast mix series twice with 2015’s Boiler Room Chicago DJ Set[17] and 2017’s Ray-Ban x Boiler Room Weekender.[18] Over the years, DJ Heather has played at Ministry Of Sound (London), Pacha (Ibiza), The End (London), Amnesia (Ibiza) Cielo (NY) Turnmills (London), and Sub Club (Glasgow). In addition to using her own name — as Heather, and DJ Heather — she has made recordings under her many aliases, like Dulce Caramel, Dulce Caramelo, Mrs. Robinson, The Control Group, and Children Of Divorce.
