Michael Benjamin Owor (1975 – 5 June 2025), known professionally as DJ Bush Baby, was a Ugandan radio personality and media executive who played a significant role in developing East Africa's contemporary music industry through his work at major broadcasting stations.[1]
Career
Owor began his career at Radio Uganda's Green Channel (later Magic FM) in the late 1990s, where he introduced dedicated hip-hop programming.[2] He later co-founded Tanzania's Kiss FM in 2003, helping establish it as a platform for East African urban music.[3]
From 2007-2015, he served as Head of Programming at Urban TV and NXT Radio in Uganda, where he created influential shows like The Takeover and 5 Live that launched numerous Ugandan artists.[4]
Industry impact
Owor's contributions to East African media include:
- Establishing the first dedicated hip-hop chart show in Uganda (Friday Night Live, EATV 2005-2010)[5]Template:Fails verification
- Founding the Salute the DJ training program in 2012 that professionalized radio broadcasting standards in Uganda[6]
- Receiving the Buzz Teeniez Award for Media Personality of the Year (2014) and Salute the DJ Lifetime Achievement Award (2019)[5]
Later years
After recovering from a 2021[7] accident, Owor joined Tanzania's XRadio in 2024 as Director of Programming.[8] He was found deceased in his Entebbe studio on 5 June 2025.[9][10]
