The name Bunuel was bestowed upon Strömberg by Ari Aaltonen, the brother of Remu Aaltonen of the Hurriganes[4]. DJ Bunuel started using the name in public in the late 1980s when he was working for Radio Ettan in Helsinki[5]

He is a high school graduate (1982, Lönnbeckska gymnasiet)[1]

From 2014 to 2017 Bunuel was a project manager for the four-year Epic Light initiative that sought to create media and cultural content with people with lived experience in mental health and disabled people. The initiative is still active.[6][6]

Career as DJ

DJ Bunuel started playing records in 1977 at a disco at his school (Östra Svenska Läroverket) together with his friend Mikke Stenberg. The duo was known as DJ Cripples and their career took off fast after they made contact with the legendary Helsinki DJ Joke Linnamaa. Through him, the duo were booked to play e.g. basketball games with Torpan Pojat and the Hiihtolomadisko at Ruka in northern Finland.[7]

The duo split up in 1979 and Joke Linnamaa recommended DJ Bunuel as a disc jockey for the Hurriganes. DJ Bunuel took the band up on their offer and played with them with some regularity from 1979 to 1982. From then on, the number of gigs he was asked to play started increasing and pretty soon he was playing all over Finland. Most gigs were at restaurants and bars, but there were also more and more private events, from weddings to company parties. At this point, DJ Bunuel started to show a real interest in unusual venues and expanding the role of the DJ beyond just making people dance. At the time, he was performing as DJ Long.

Around the middle of the decade, DJ Bunuel worked for a year as a regular DJ at Viking Saga, a cruise ship on the Helsinki-Stockholm route. His official title was music host and hosting the bands playing on the boat was part of his job.

In the 1990s, DJ Bunuel played regularly at various clubs in Helsinki, including Par 4, Soda Bar, Kaivohuone and Nylon. At this time he was also one of the founders of the Ski Bistro at Pyhätunturi in Lapland and responsible for booking bands at Kaivohuone.

After the millennium, he was a resident DJ at restaurants Mecca and Grotesk.

Since the late 1990s, DJ Bunuel has been increasingly interested in background music and the opportunities it presents. Through the years he has designed the musical atmospheres for various shops, restaurants and bars in Helsinki (Mecca, Arnolds, Messenius, Hotel Klaus Kurki, Grotesk, Restaurant and Café Lasipalatsi, Bar 9, Spies, Meripaviljonki, Shop & Spa Jolie), Tuusula (Krapihovi) and Porvoo (Bar Soho, Runo Hotel) and Hotelli Punkaharju, just to name a few. Background music curated by DJ Bunuel has in the past been featured at Skanno furniture store and many Kämp Group restaurants and hotels.
