Cyril W. Chen

Cyril W. Chen is a Canadian animator, illustrator, and interdisciplinary artist[1]. They are known for their 2D animation work on Queens of the Qing Dynasty[2]. They identify as non-binary[3].

Early Life

Chen was born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Cantonese-Chinese immigrants. They were diagnosed with gender dysphoria through the University of Waterloo student health services, where they studied briefly in 2016.[4]

Career

In 2020, Cyril joined Neutral Ground Artist-Run Centre as an archives assistant, where they have archived Soil Digital Media Suite, a flash art collection co-founded and run by late director Brenda Cleniuk from 1997-2015. Cyril has worked with the MacKenzie Art GalleryGone in a Flash[5] online event and educational series.
