Cynthia Graham Hurd (June 21, 1960 - June 17, 2015) was a librarian and community leader in Charleston, South Carolina for 31 years before she was killed in the Charleston church shooting. After her death a library was renamed for her, a mural was painted on her library, a fund was established, and a kindness campaign launched.[1] She served on various boards.

She was born in Charleston. Melvin and Henrietta Graham were her parents and she one of six children.[2] She sang in the youth choir at church, attended James Simons Elementary School and the High School of Charleston, and graduated from Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University) in Atlanta in 1982 with a degree in mathematics.[2] She worked at the John L. Dart Library in downtown Charleston, part of thr Charleston County Public Libraries.[1]

The College of Charleston renamed its Colonial Scholarship academic scholarship fund for in-state students to the Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Scholarship. Charleston County Public Library renamed its St. Andrews Library branch, which she managed, the Cynthia Graham Hurd St. Andrews Regional Library.[3]

The Cynthia Graham Hurd Foundation for Reading and Civic Engagement was established to continue her legacy with literacy and reading programs.[4]

She was married to Stephen Hurd. Malcolm Graham is her brother.

She received the Phoenix Award from the Congressional Black Caucus. Springer Nature offers a Hurd Scholarship to librarians.[5] The Charleston Libraries present a Cynthia Graham Hurd Staff Award.
