Cynthia "Cindy" Crawford (married Jordan) (January 13, 1947 – October 14, 2007[1]) was one of four adopted children of Hollywood actress Joan Crawford and twin of Cathy Crawford.

After the release of her sister Christina Crawford's infamous book, Cindy and her twin Cathy claimed throughout her lives their adoptive mother, Joan Crawford, was a "very loving person".[2]

Birth

The twins' biological mother, Theda Mildred Cotten, died 11 days after her birth due to kidney failure at the age of 21. Their biological father, J. W. Jorden, had abandoned their biological mother during the last part of her pregnancy and birth.[3]

Adoption

Cindy, and her twin sister Cathy, had lived with Joan Crawford for over a year, before she officially adopted the twins on June 11, 1948.[3]

Cindy and Cathy had lived with Joan Crawford at her Brentwood home for over a year, before she officially adopted the twins on June 11, 1948. Joan Crawford did not use the infamous adoption broker, Georgia Tann, for the adoption of her twins, as claimed by recent online rumours.[4]

When Crawford married Alfred Steele in 1955, he took on the role of the twins' adoptive father until his death in 1959. After his death, both Cathy and Cynthia moved to New York City with Crawford. Later she would reconnect with the rest of the family and eventually moved to be closer to her biological father, J. W. Jordan, and worked for the family business.[5]

Personal life

Cynthia was enrolled in boarding at the age of 8 and eventually attended the University of Dubuque. She met her husband, John Jordan there, and in 1967, they married, moving to Dubuque, Iowa. They had two sons together -- Jan (born in 1968), and Joel C. Jordan (born in 1971). In 1976, one year before her adoptive mother's death, the couple divorced.

Defending her adoptive mother, Joan Crawford

"I think Christina was jealous," she says. "She wanted to be the one person she couldn't be – Mother. I think she'll use Joan until she can't get any more good out of it. Then she'll dump her." She went on, "I never saw Joan drunk. It was hard to be a single parent. It's still pretty rough. I've got first-hand experience".[6]

Cindy appeared in the 1996 A&E's biography film of Joan Crawford[7], reiterating her position that Joan was firm but not abusive.[8]

In 1999, while Christina was promoting a new edition of her book Mommie Dearest, Christina claimed that Cindy and Cathy were not real twins. The twins were upset upon hearing this, and Cathy filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania. Instead of going to trial in federal court, both agreed to use arbitrators. Cathy won the lawsuit against Christina and was awarded $5,000 plus court costs for public statements wrongfully made about her.[9]
