War years and match-up with Bobby Riggs

While stationed at Hickam Field in the Pacific during WWII, Sussman accepted a challenge from tennis great Bobby Riggs who had arrived in Hawaii on an exhibition tour. Sussman defeated the previously undefeated table-tennis-touring Riggs, earning Sussman a spot on a number of exhibition tours with Riggs.[4]
