Cowrywise is a financial technology (FinTech) company that digitizes investment management for Africans and enables secure access to savings and investment products.[1] It is licensed by the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (Nigeria) as a portfolio management company.[2] Cowrywise is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and based in Lagos State, Nigeria.[3][4]

History

Cowrywise was founded in 2017 by co-founders, Razaq Ahmed and Edward Popoola as a wealth management platform that grants access to financial services to Africans.[5] In June 2018, Cowrywise received seed funding from Microtraction, and was accepted into the Y Combinator Summer 2018 Batch July 2018.[6] In December 2018, Cowrywise was listed as one of the 50 World-Changing Startups to Watch in 2019 by Kairos, an early-stage investment fund in the United States of America.[7] Cowrywise joined Catalyst Fund's portfolio in January 2020, a JP Morgan and UK Aid backed fintech accelerator.[8] In January 2021, Cowrywise raised $3 million pre-series A funding. A round that was led by Washington DC-based Quona Capital.[9] In June 2021, it received a license to operate as a Fund/Portfolio Manager from Nigeria’s capital markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).[10]
