Cliff Chenfeld is an American entertainment industry entrepreneur. He is co-founder of the New York City-based independent music company Razor & Tie and the children's music brand Kidz Bop,[1] and a film producer.
Chenfeld was born in Albany, New York and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He majored in political science at Ohio State University and worked at Schoolkids Records in Columbus, Ohio. He attended New York University Law School where he met classmate and future business partner Craig Balsam.[1] He earned his JD in 1985.[2]
Chenfeld began his career as an attorney. After practicing law for four years, he left his law career behind and with Balsam founded Razor & Tie in 1990.[3]
In 2001 Chenfeld and Balsam launched the Kidz Bop brand, in which young singers cover pop hits.[1]
Career
Razor & Tie
Chenfeld and Balsam founded Razor & Tie in 1990, naming their independent label for the dress requirements of the legal profession they had left behind. It became the largest independent record label in the U.S., and the Razor & Tie umbrella also included a music publishing house, a media buying agency, a home video production company, and a direct marketing operation.[4]
Chenfeld and Balsam owned and operated Razor & Tie until January 1, 2018. That year a sale of the label to Concord Music was completed.[5]
Kidz Bop
Chenfeld and Balsam founded Kidz Bop in 2001.[6] The brand expanded to include live touring, international versions, and toy partnerships.[7]
Radio show, film production, other projects
Chenfeld is the host of radio show "Modern Sounds," part of WLIW-FM's ALL ARTS Radio Hour.[8]
He was an executive producer of films including Serious Moonlight, Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound, Concussion,[9] No Pay, Nudity,[10] and Women Who Kill,[11] and is an executive producer of the documentary The Choice.[12]
In 2018 Chenfeld and Balsam launched RT Industries, a catalog-driven record label[13] that owns master recordings from numerous popular artists.[3]
In 2024 Chenfeld became a partner in Jonny Shipes' full-service entertainment company GoodTalk.[14]
