Claudia Joskowicz is a video installation artist living and working between Santa Cruz, Bolivia and Brooklyn, New York. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Kadist Foundation, and the Colección de Arte del Banco de la República, among others.[1]

Early life and education

Joskowicz was born and grew up in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia to a Polish/Jewish WWII refugee father and a Bolivian mother. She studied architecture at the University of Houston, and later, at the Ecole d'Architecture Paris Villemin in Paris, France. In 1997, Joskowicz moved to New York to earn her Masters of Fine Arts at New York University (2000) and has divided her time between New York and her hometown of Santa Cruz since then.

Career

Claudia Joskowicz makes poignant and unsettling video works that meld public and private histories. Blending documentary with fiction, she recreates episodes of violence excavated from Bolivia’s history in order to reveal hidden traumas and offer the possibility of catharsis. In her 2008 work Vallegrande 1967, Joskowicz uses video to imaginatively recreate an event from Bolivia’s “mytho-historic” past, focusing on the death of Ernesto “Che” Guevara.[2]
