Clara Cullen (Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine writer and filmmaker. She is known for her work in independent cinema, music videos, and contemporary art projects, with films screened and awarded at international festivals.
Biography
Clara Cullen was born in Argentina in 1986, studied film at Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires and Documentary Film-making at Parsons School of Design University in NYC.[1]. She trained with Spike Lee in New York and Werner Herzog in Los Angeles.[2]. While living in New York, she shot a series of interviews with porn stars that were shown at Maccarone Gallery (NYC) and FacSimile Gallery (Milan) in 2010.
She has contributed short films to platforms such as Nowness and The New York Times, directing works including Beauty is a Form of Genius, Airtight, Above and Below, and Max. Her interactive film Ballroom Battle[3] won a Lovies award in 2013. Inspired by the dark web, she directed her debut opera Hercules in Mato Grosso in 2015, staged at the Dixon Place Theater in the Lower East Side of New York in collaboration with Argentine Opera House Teatro Colon[4]. In 2016 Clara was selected to participate in a film residence at The Prada Foundation in Venice. Clara’s work was shown in the Biennial of Moving Image in Buenos Aires at the Faena Art Center in 2017.
In 2018 Cullen directed her first music video for Swedish singer Lykke Li Utopia[5]. In 2019 Clara, along with jazz composer Richard Sears, won the Shed Open Call Commission in NYC, a grant to make a performance using projection as an instrument, triggering visual phrases in reaction to the sonic improvisations. They performed at The Shed in NYC in the spring of 2019[6].
In 2021, her short documentary Lost and Found was screened at festivals including IndieLisboa[7], SEMINCI[8], and BADOC Festival. The Portuguese magazine Máxima named it one of the “five must-see films” at IndieLisboa[9].
Her feature-length fiction film Manuela[10] had its world premiere at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in 2022[11]. The film received the Best Latin American and Spanish Film award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival[12] and won Best Director at the Next Generation Indie Film Awards[13]. Manuela was also screened at multiple international festivals, including the Los Angeles Film Festival[14]
