Christopher "Toph" Matthew Eggers (born February 23, 1983) is an American writer and editor. He was a central character in the 2000 best-selling memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius written by his older brother and former guardian Dave Eggers.

Early Life and Education

Eggers was born in Lake Forest, Illinois, the youngest of four siblings. He is 13 years younger than his brother Dave Eggers. When Eggers was 8 years old both his parents died within 5 weeks of each other, his father, an attorney (John K. Eggers (1936–1991) and his mother, (Heidi McSweeney Eggers (1941-1992) an elementary school teacher. His brother Dave Eggers became legal guardian of the youngest Eggers and subsequently moved to Berkley, California. Eggers oldest brother, Bill Eggers, is a published American writer, researcher, policy analyst, and government and management consultant. His sister Elizabeth "Beth" Eggers died by suicide in 2003[1]. Eggers sister-in-law is American novelist, journalist, editor, and screenplay writer Vendela Vida. When Eggers was a teenager he attended and graduated the prestigious boarding school of Choate Rosemary Hall. He later attended UC Berkley to study Film.

A Heartbreaking Work Of Staggering Genius

In 2000 Eggers brother Dave Eggers published A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize[2]. The book heavily focused on Dave Egger's relationship to young Toph particularly while living in the San Fransisco Bay Area. It is unclear how much of Toph is actually represented in the book, as while it is an autobiographica, Dave Eggers admits there are tangental fantasy scenes throughout the novel. To date, Toph Eggers has never commented on the book publicly or spoken about his parents death that orphaned him.

Eggers worked as a writer for McSweeney's Magazine founded by his brother Dave Eggers and named after their mother's maiden name. At age 15, Eggers published his first articles for the magazine about romancing teenage girls[3] Toph and Dave Eggers wrote a children's book series together called The Haggis-On-Whey World of Unbelievable Brilliance series from McSweeney’s Books[4] that was to be optioned into a film production[5][6]. He later moved from Berkley, California to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career as a screenwriter where he worked for Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers, employed by directors Wes Anderson, Judd Apatow and Spike Jonze[7]. In 2018, Eggers announced that he would be publishing a book based on his life entitled Life In Theory but as of today the book has not been published.
