Christine M. McDonough (September 18, 1963 – December 18, 2024)[1] was a physical therapist and health care researcher whose professional work focused on the implementation of evidence-based practices to improve outcomes in orthopaedics, geriatrics, and work disability prevention.[2]
Early Life and Education
Christine M. McDonough, 61, was born September 18, 1963, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Edward and Kathleen (Reen) McDonough. Christine McDonough grew up in Dedham, Massachusetts, and received her bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Vermont in 1985. She was a licensed physical therapist in the state of Massachusetts as well as a certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults (CEEAA). She operated her own physical therapy practice in Needham, Massachusetts, for several years before moving to Norwich, Vermont, with her husband, Leonard Calandrella, where they raised their daughters, Julie and Emily. Christine McDonough earned both her master's degree and doctorate from Dartmouth College Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences (CECS) and worked as an assistant professor and medical researcher for Boston University and University of Pittsburgh.[1][2]
Career/Professional Work
Christine McDonough joined the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy as an assistant professor in January 2018 and was jointly appointed in University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. McDonough was a faculty member of the University of Pittsburgh Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program and taught the Evidence-Based Practice curriculum.[2]
Dr. McDonough’s research focused on the development, dissemination, and implementation of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). She served as the CPG editor for the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and contributed as a consultant across various academies to the development of CPGs used to support the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of a range of conditions managed by physical therapists.[2]
Additionally, her research included studies on measurement of patient-reported outcomes and work disability, opioid use, and fall prevention in older adults. More recently, Dr. McDonough’s efforts were focused on the implementation of evidence-based practices to improve outcomes in orthopaedics, geriatrics, and work disability prevention.[2]
During her time at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. McDonough served as the Co-Director of the Pitt Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Implementation Lab[3] as well as a leadership position with the Pitt Dissemination and Implementation Science Collaborative.[4] Dr. McDonough also served as the Co-Director of the LeaHD Research and Data Analysis Core (RDAC)[5], Co-Director of Pilot Studies Core (PSC) of the Center on Health Services Training and Research (CoHSTAR)[6], and the Director of the Techniques Component of the Learning Health Systems Rehabilitation Research Network (LeaRRn).[2][7]
Dr. McDonough acted as a journal reviewer for many publications, including ongoing service to Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal, Quality of Life Research, Disability and Rehabilitation, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. She was also involved in several grant review panels, including the Veteran’s Administration Health Science Research and Development (HSR&D) Scientific Merit Review Board.[2]
Personal Life
A soccer player and fan since she was a child, Christine McDonough was also an avid sailor and spent many days on the waters of Buzzards Bay and off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. She was an enthusiastic traveler and made many trips to Europe for both business and pleasure.[1][2]

Throughout her professional career, Christine McDonough was recognized with several awards. She was awarded the Partners in Excellence Award from MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2009. In 2016, Dr. McDonough received the Jack Walker Research Award from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) as well as the Excellence in Research Award from the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy. In 2017, she was recognized as an Elite Reviewer for 2017 by the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In 2023, Dr. McDonough was designated as a Catherine Worthingham Fellow by the American Physical Therapy Association.[2]
