Christian Martin Hennig (born December 14, 1966 in Hamburg) is a German statistician. Since October 2019 he is Full Professor at the University of Bologna.

Education and professional career

After graduating from high school in 1986, Hennig studied mathematics at the University of Hamburg; he graduated in 1997 as Dr. rer. nat. under Karl Behnen.[1] In 2005 he habilitated in Hamburg with the habilitation thesis Cluster Stability, Cluster Validation and the Principle of Asymmetry in Cluster Analysis. From October 1993 to March 1997 he was University Assistant and from 1997 to 2005 University Lecturer at the Institute of Mathematical Stochastics at the University of Hamburg. This activity was interrupted from October 2001 to September 2003 by a fixed term postdoctoral position as University Lecturer at the Seminar for Statistics, ETH Zurich, with Frank Hampel.

From April 2005 to September 2010, Hennig was Lecturer and until October 2018 Senior Lecturer at the Department of Statistical Science, University College London (UCL). From October 2018 on he was Assistant Professor, then from 2019 Full Professor at the Dipartimento di Scienze Statistiche "Paolo Fortunati" at the University of Bologna.[2][3]

Research areas and editorship

Hennig has a broad range of research interests: cluster analysis, foundations of statistics, robust statistics, data visualization, statistical modeling, multivariate statistics, supervised classification, statistical learning and applied statistics in various fields.[3] He is particularly interested in the implications of constructivist philosophy for data analysis and statistics.[4]

His activities as Editor / Associate Editor at the following scientific journals are:

  • Statistics and Computing (Associate Editor since 2007)[5]
  • Advances in Data Analysis and Classification (Associate Editor since 2012)[6]
  • Canadian Journal of Statistics (Associate Editor since 2021)[7]
  • Statistica (Editor-in-Chief since 2022)[8]

Selected works

Hennig has published - partly with co-authors - about 130 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings[9] as well as - together with M. Meila, F. Murtagh, and R. Rocci - a Handbook of Cluster Analysis:
