After the introduction of the COVID vaccine, he helped to bridge the gap with Filipino Americans and to raise awareness of vaccine safety and efficacy.

Early life

Castaneda was born in Maryland to Jessie and Edwin T Castaneda.[2] His father is a prominent internal medicine physician practicing in Bergen County Maryland, and served as chief of staff from 2006-2009.[3] Christian has one sister that is a practicing psychologist.

In his youth, Castaneda worked for the Ocean City Beach Patrol as a life guard. It was during his youth that he developed a love for beach and water sports.[4][5]

Education

Pre-medical education

Castaneda attended and graduated in 2006 from Worcester Preparatory School, a private high school located in Berlin Maryland.[6] He was later invited back to give the commencement speech for the graduating class of 2021.[7][8] School officials were excited that one of their own could achieve so much, and were double surprised when it was a student like Castaneda.

He later attended Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster Pennsylvania. He graduated in 2010, with a major in bachelor of arts and a minor of computer science. He worked part time as a research assistant in the biology and computer science department. In addition he volunteered for the Clinic for Special Children. in 2008, Castaneda participated int he Alpha Male Contest, performing a rendition of A Whole New World[9] In 2011, Castaneda completed a masters in biomedical science from The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton Pennsylvania.[10] Given his strong interest in water sports, he joined the F&M Water Polo Club in 2009.[11] He would later on become the team president in 2010.[12]

Medical education

After graduation from F&M, Castaneda moved to Grenada in the Caribbean, where he attended St. George's University from 2011 to 2015.

Teaching

During medical school, Castaneda continued to work as a biochemistry and physiology tutor for the other students.

Residency

Upon graduation, Castaneda entered Internal Medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. During his tenure as a medical resident, Dr. Castaneda found his passion in the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine. Dr. Castaneda was known for both his passion and compassion. He was a key leader of medical education and was nominated and won several awards for teaching resident of the year. He was also notable for his research into testicles and cadaveric sperm harvesting.

Fellowship

Finding his passion for critical care and pulmonary medicine, Dr. Castaneda applied for and matched in a the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at his home institution of NYPQ under Dr. Anthony Smith and Dr. Olumayowa Abe. Prior to fellowship, he participated in the 2018 ATS Fellow Boot Camp Course.[13] During his first year of fellowship, he was nominated for by the residents and won fellow of the year due to his caring nature and aptitude for teaching. To help improve patient care, he revised the DKA management protocol at NYPQ.[14]

Publications

Castaneda has been the authors of many posters presented at international pulmonary critical care conferences. During the Chest conference in 2017, Dr. Castaneda was the winner of the oral case presentation for his presentation of Levofloxacin-induced Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonitis. A disease that was mired in controversy and still debate.

Post training

After the completion of his medical training, Dr. Castaneda moved to Honolulu, where he currently works as an intensivist at Queens Medical Center.[41]

ICU Consult

Due to his penchant for education and pulmonary & critical care medicine, he became a founding member and owner of ICU Consult.org.[42][43] The goals of which are to share important changes in the field of pulmonary & critical medicine to other medical residents and fellow.[44]

COVID 19

It was during his fellowship training that the first wave of COVID-19 had hit New York City. Working in Flushing New York, he was key in the treatment of patient's during the surge. Despite the heavy patient load, Dr. Castaneda exemplified excellent patient care.

During the covid surge, Dr. Castaneda was instrumental in documenting hospital conditions and providing primary source information of what it was like to be a doctor in the middle of a pandemic.[45] Due to the amount of misinformation, Dr. Castaneda produced several videos to educate and dispell this information.[46][47][48]

He was later invited to Makilala, the first Filipino Talk Show in New York City to discuss the safety and efficacy of the covid-19 vaccine.[49]

Atheletcism

Castaneda is an avid athlete participating in multiple Iron Mans, Cycling Races, triathlon[50] runs of various lengths including marathons.[51] He has participated and completed the Half Ironman Atlantic City 2017,[52] Atlantic City 2018,[53] Eagleman 2019[54] and Full Ironman Maryland 2019.[55] Having finally completed a full iron man, although ranking poorly, realizing his advancing age, and likely physical peak, decided to stop competing.
