Christopher Shea (born March 4, 1971) is the Vice President of Football Operations and Team Counsel for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL). He was hired by the team in 2017 and promoted to his current position in 2021.

College career

After a stint as an assistant coach at Belmont High School, Shea began his college career in 1992 as a Student Manager at his alma mater Boston College. After 5 years there, he was hired as an Assistant Coach at Harvard where he would coach for 2 years before returning to Boston College as a Recruiting Assistant.

NFL career

Having had a summer internship as an Equipment/Operations Intern in 1995 with the Carolina Panthers in between his college stints, Shea made the full time leap to the National Football League in 2000, being hired by the New York Jets as a Pro Personnel Assistant. In his 5 seasons with New York, the Jets went the playoffs 3 times and had a winning record in 4 of those years. In 2005, Shea was hired by the Dallas Cowboys to be a Scouting Consultant, where he would remain for 2 years before taking a job as a Law Clerk at Colleran, O’Hara, and Mills. After 2 years there, he would return to the NFL – at the League Office as a Law Clerk (2007) and Coordinator of Labor Operations (2008).

When Bill Parcells, whom Shea worked with at the Cowboys, took the Executive Vice President of football operations at the Miami Dolphins in 2008, Shea joined him in Miami as the Player Personnel Coordinator. In his first season with the Dolphins, was part of the “biggest single-season turnaround in NFL history” as they improved from 1-15 in 2007 to 11-5 in 2008.[1]

After 8 seasons with Miami, Shea was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 to be their Director of Scouting Administration/Strategic Management[2] and was subsequently named a year later to Director of Scouting Administration/Personnel Scout.

On May 27, 2017, Shea was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as its Salary Cap/Legal Executive.[3] He was promoted to Football Operations Counsel/Personnel Executive the next year[4], and in 2021 he was promoted again to his current post of Vice President Football Operations/Team Counsel.[5] In the 6 seasons Shea has been with the club, the Chiefs have compiled a 74-24 record (best in the NFL over that span), won the division each of those 6 seasons, and participated in 3 Super Bowls, winning 2 of them.

Personal life

Shea earned his bachelor's degree in history from Boston College before earning a JD degree, with a concentration in labor and employment law, from Hofstra University School of Law. Chris and his wife, Kirsten, have one daughter.
