Jimi "Chopmaster J" Dright is an American record producer, drummer, and hip hop artist best known as the co-founder and original member of Digital Underground, one of the most influential groups in West Coast hip hop. As a key creative architect of the group’s funk-driven sound, Dright helped shape a new era of experimental hip hop blending live instrumentation, digital sampling, and socially conscious lyricism.
Early life and education
Jimi Dright was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. From a young age, he was drawn to rhythm, technology, and funk music, often experimenting with drum machines and recording gear. He attended Franklin Elementary School in Oakland, California, where he was classmates with future U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Years later, Dright dedicated an album to her leadership and message of unity.
Formation of Digital Underground
In the mid-1980s, Dright co-founded Digital Underground with Greg "Shock G" Jacobs. As a drummer, producer, and conceptual co-creator, Chopmaster J played an essential role in crafting the group’s early sound, which fused live funk elements with humorous and socially aware storytelling.
The group rose to international fame with the 1990 single "The Humpty Dance," featured on their debut album Sex Packets. Digital Underground became a cornerstone of the Oakland hip hop scene and introduced several major artists, most notably Tupac Shakur, who made his recording debut on the group’s 1991 single "Same Song."
Career beyond Digital Underground
After leaving the group, Dright continued producing and developing artists under his company Digital Dope Entertainment. His focus remained on blending classic funk with new digital production styles.

S.O.T.U.(Son Of The Undergorund)aimed at carrying forward the original group’s legacy with a futuristic sound and image. Under this banner, Dright released the album Sex Packets 2 in 2024, paying tribute to the original while updating its concept for modern audiences.

Dright is also the creator and producer of the upcoming documentary The Digital Underground Legacy — a comprehensive film chronicling the rise, cultural influence, and evolution of the group and its members.
