Cho Kuan-Ting (born 1986) ,The politician hails from Yingge District in New Taipei City, Taiwan. He currently serves as a council member of the New Taipei City Council, Secretary-General of the Democratic Progressive Party Caucus in the New Taipei City Council, Democratic Progressive Party spokesperson, and political commentator. He was formerly the youngest Director of the Information Bureau in a special municipality government in Taiwan[1]. He has previously worked as a reporter in New Taipei City, a legislative assistant, Director of the Information Bureau in Taichung City Government, and Chief of Staff in Office of the Minister of Transportation and Communications.[2]

From May 2020 to May 2021, he pursued a Master's degree in Public Affairs at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2022, he ran as a candidate for the New Taipei City Council representing the Democratic Progressive Party and ultimately won the election with 23,907 votes[3].

Personal life

Cho Kuan-Ting's father had been elected as a representative of the people and also served as the Vice Chairman of the Yingge Representative Council in New Taipei City. From a young age, Cho Kuan-Ting was exposed to public affairs and influenced by his father's involvement in the field[4].

In early 2020, Cho Kuan-Ting made the decision to pursue further education abroad and enrolled in the Master's program in Public Affairs at the University of California, Berkeley in the United States[5].

Political career

Congressional Assistant

In 2012 Cho Kuan-Ting joined Lin Chia-lung's parliamentary office as the Head of the Press Division. In this role, he was responsible for drafting bills related to the Education and Culture Committee, preparing for inquiries, proposing budgets, and handling media communications[6].

Director of the Information Bureau

On 25 December 2014, Cho Kuan-Ting assumed the position of Director of the Information Bureau in the Taichung City Government, becoming the youngest bureau director in the city government's team. Shortly after taking office, Cho Kuan-Ting emphasized the importance of creativity and communication with the citizens through the Information Bureau. The bureau's responsibilities also included cable television and providing guidance for high-quality film production. With the advent of the digital age, many government agencies were lacking the ability to keep up with the digital era. In the future, Cho Kuan-Ting planned to leverage digital media to strengthen communication and ensure that citizens have a better understanding of the city government's policies[7].

Ministry of Transportation and Communications

On May 28, 2019, Cho Kuan-Ting assumed the position of Chief of Staff in Office of the Minister of Transportation and Communications. He stated that even after taking up the role, he would still return to his home in Taichung. He expressed his dedication to serving at the Ministry, drawing inspiration from his previous experiences of working for the betterment of the citizens in Taichung[8].

New Taipei City Councilor

On October 14, 2021, Cho Kuan-Ting held a press conference to announce his candidacy for the New Taipei City Council in the 8th District[9].

On May 5, 2022, the New Taipei City division of the Democratic Progressive Party announced the results of the primary election poll for the New Taipei City Council in the 8th District. Cho Kuan-Ting emerged as the frontrunner with a remarkable polling result of 22.4%, showcasing his impressive surge in popularity[10].

On November 26, 2022, the 9-in-1 elections were held, including the New Taipei City Council election for the 8th District. There were a total of 17 candidates running for the position. The competition was intense, but in the end, Cho Kuan-Ting emerged victorious, winning with a total of 23,907 votes[11].

Assuming the spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Party

On March 24, 2023, DPP Secretary-General Hsu Li-ming held a press conference to announce the appointment of two additional spokespersons, in addition to the existing spokesperson and Director of the News Department, Zhang Zhihao. The newly appointed spokespersons are Cho Kuan-Ting and Michelle Lin[12].
