Mari Makkonen (born December 11), known professionally as Chione, is a Finnish singer and songwriter.[1] Notable singles include “Light,” “Uninvited,” “Highway,” “Bohemian,” “Paradise,”[2] “Madness of the Gods,” “Hey You,” and “Polar Night.” Chione’s music has achieved airplay worldwide, and she is the creative force behind the music and lyrics of all her published songs. In recognition of her songwriting talent, Chione received a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation in 2022.[3]

Early life and education

Chione was born and raised in Savonlinna, Finland, where she studied at Savonlinna Lyseo High School. She took vocal training at the Savonlinna Music and Dance Academy. Chione joined Point Blank Music School, London, to study music production and later graduated from the Laajasalon opisto, Helsinki, in 2017. At Laajasalo she trained as a vocal soloist under the guidance of Antti Hyvärinen.

Chione also holds a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and degree in audiovisual communications and she completed an acting course at the New York Film Academy in Florence in 2022.

Career

Chione began her career in 2018 with the release of her debut single, “Light”. Her breakthrough came in 2020 when she released the single “Bohemian.” The video for Bohemian was a collaborative effort with the advertising agency Haaja, filmed at the Kulttuurikellari performance space in Savonlinna. Chione was the second director and scriptwriter for the song’s video. The song was recognized with the Best Shorts Competition (2021) and Global Music Awards (2022) for Best Music Video. It also received an honorable mention from the Independent Shorts Awards for Best Music Video in 2021.[4]

Other notable singles include "Uninvited", “Highway,” “Hey You,”[5] “Madness of the Gods,”[6] and “Paradise.” Paradise earned a spot on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist and gained airplay both in Finland and internationally. Chione has collaborated with the artist manager Mika Karhumaa in 2023 and Heikki Marttila of the band Stella at Guru Studio in Joensuu, who has produced most of her songs.

Chione also performs gigs at venues across Finland.
