Chione (real name Mari Makkonen, born December 11 in Savonlinna, Finland) is a Finnish singer-songwriter and music producer.[1] Her music is rooted in dark pop, combining strong melodies and symbolic lyrics with prominent guitar elements that give her sound a distinctive character. She writes, composes, arranges and pre-produces her own music and creates and produces her own music videos. She has worked with established musicians and music producers in Finland and internationally, including Grammy-nominated producer Eric Rosse, who produced her song “Dance with the Devil” (2026).[2][3][4]
Early life and education
Chione was born and raised in Savonlinna, Finland. She studied at Savonlinna Lyseo High School and received vocal training at the Savonlinna Music and Dance Academy.
She moved to London in 2015, where she studied music production at Point Blank Music School. She later graduated from Laajasalo College in Helsinki in 2017 as a vocal soloist, where she received training from Finnish musician and conductor Antti Hyvärinen. The following year, in 2018, she released her debut single “Light.”
In addition to her studies in music, Chione holds a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management and a degree in audiovisual communications. She has also studied acting at the New York Film Academy in Florence, Italy. She currently lives in Cannes on the French Riviera and spends part of the year in Savonlinna.
Career
Following the release of her debut single in 2018, Chione has continued to release music regularly. Her songs have received radio airplay in Finland and internationally and have appeared on Spotify playlists. She performs at venues across Finland, and her music videos have been filmed in locations including London and Venice. Her music has also been featured on a billboard in Times Square, New York in 2024.[5][6][7]
Throughout her career, Chione has worked with a number of Finnish and international producers and musicians, including Finnish musician and producer Heikki Marttila of Stella at Guru Studio. The songs “Light,” “Uninvited,” “Bohemian,” “Hey You!,” “Highway,” “Madness of the Gods,” “Paradise” and “Polar Night” were composed and written by Chione, with production and mixing by Heikki Marttila. Hannu Hattunen of Mad Hat Audio handled mastering. Mikko Leinonen, a former drummer in Suvi Teräsniska’s band, played drums and keyboards on “Light” and “Uninvited.” Heikki Marttila played the guitars on the songs, with Pertti Feller also contributing as a guitarist on the song “Paradise.”[8]
In 2022, Chione received a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation in recognition of her songwriting. The same year, she released “Paradise,” which was featured on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist and Music Finland’s “New Indie Music from Finland” playlist.[9]
In 2024, she was accepted as a member of the Finnish Music Creators Association (SuomenMusiikintekijät ry).
In 2024, Chione featured as a lyricist and vocalist on electronic music producer Jicode’s single “Eternal,” released through the Slovenian record label Xclusive Records. The collaboration received radio airplay on stations including YleX in Finland.
Later in 2024, Chione released “Mind Games,” which she wrote and recorded at The Recording Studio in London. The song received international radio airplay and was included on Music Finland’s Spotify playlist. The music video was filmed in Westminster.
For the 2025 single “Queen of Hearts,” Chione is credited with composition and lyrics, with production by Topi Kilpinen of Isolla Music. Kilpinen was nominated for an Emma Award for Producer of the Year in 2024.
In early 2025, Chione participated in the Finnish Music Creators Association’s artist residency in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles. Her residency was cut short due to wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
“Dance with the Devil,” released in 2026, received international radio exposure and was also played on Yle Radio Suomi.
Dance with the Devil
Chione released “Dance with the Devil” in 2026. The song was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Eric Rosse, who has worked with artists including Tori Amos, Maroon 5 and Lisa Marie Presley.
The composition and lyrics were written by Chione, with Rosse responsible for production, drums and keyboards. Niko Rosse played guitars, while Eric Rosse recorded, mixed and mastered the track.
The single combines Chione’s dark pop style with strong guitar elements. The music video was filmed in Venice, Italy.
