Chieko Mori (森 稚重子, Chieko Mori) is a Japanese koto player, composer, music arranger and Jiyu-ryu grand koto master.

KOTO STUDIOKOTO STUDIO自由流 (Jiyu-ryu)[2][3]

Background

Born in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, Japan.Graduated from Keio University. Studied under Tadao Sawai during high school and university, and after graduation, she began her musical activities in Europe. Her overseas performance activities span over 70 cities in 18 countries, include composing music for the Giorgio Armani Fashion Expo(Video on YouTube) , Beppu Project 2006[4] and performing at the Venice Biennale 2001. Since 2007, she has presided over KOTO STUDIO Jiyu-ryu[5] as the grand koto master, and focuses on training koto players as well as creating solo and ensemble pieces mainly in Japan.[6] On the other hand, she has based her recording and live performance activities abroad, centering in Europe, where she has composed music for contemporary dance, theater, and video works. She is one of the few independent koto players who do not belong to any existing schools in the world of Japanese music.

Biography

From the age of three, she began playing the koto (under Shizuka Kikushiga of the Ikuta school of the Todo Ongakukai), piano, calligraphy, and Nihon-buyō (Japanese dance, of the Hanayanagi school). At the age of 16, she became a Natori (an accredited master dancer) of the Hanayagi school. Her stage name is Hanayagi Fuoka.[7] As to why she did not pursue a career in Japanese dance, Mori states as below.

When in her sophomore year of high school (Oita Prefectural Beppu Tsurumigaoka High School), she formed a koto club. As the head of the club and its leader, she participated in the koto division of the Japanese Music Newcomer's Competition. (prefectural competition) The club won the first championship in only five months after its formation, followed by the participation in the national tournament.

[8] In order to learn Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons (Spring)," which she had chosen for the competition, she visited a koto player (who lived in the same prefecture) who belonged to the Sawai Koto Music Institute and received instruction from him. This led to her becoming a pupil of Tadao Sawai and receiving direct instruction from him.

She won a prize in the koto division of the 1st International Music Competition for High School Students. (Takasaki city, Gunma Prefecture)[9] Although she was advised by others to specialize in koto studies at university, she decided not to enter a music department but instead, she entered Keio University believing that she would not find musical inspiration if she only devoted herself to technical studies all day long.[10] While studying at the university, she continued to receive instruction at Tadao Sawai's home, but he passed away during her sophomore year. She continued to study under Kazue Sawai until graduating from university.[10] She graduated from the 42nd term of NHK's Japanese Music Technicians Training Program. Her first recital was at the Oita City Noh Theater when she was in her third year of university.[11]

Just before graduating from university, she was offered a chance to go to Italy through her lessons. It was an invitation from Fabrica,[12] an artist research center run by Benetton (It was the first invitation in the music department to a Japanese national).[13] Upon graduation, she left the Sawai school and went to Treviso, Italy in 1999, where she practiced, wrote songs, recorded, and toured Italy with members of various nationalities.

After a year of living in Fabrica, she moved her base from Italy to England. She attended SOAS, a college affiliated with the University of London, for one year[10]. After that, she was approached by each project sponsored by Fabrica, and stayed at Fabrica on a multi-month basis. In 2002, as a member of PARADISE FROM VOCALBOX led by Koichi Makigami. She has worked with Michael Galasso (composer and violinist), former director of Fabrica's music department, with whom she has produced many works since 2000, and who has been a major influence in her subsequent creative works.

The compilation album "East Asia Travelogue" (released in 2002 on Union Square Music, London) is the first album to be published in the music review book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die," compiled by Robert Dimery (Universe Publishing). The song "Irana's Dream" (Track 12) is an improvised multiple recording with Michael Galasso.

Her first solo album, "Jumping Rabbit", was released on John Zorn's Tzadik Records label (New York) in 2005, Recorded at The Hit Factory (New York). In 2012, she was invited together with Oliver Grimm to the "Electric Orpheus Academy[14]",[15] a sound programming and sound academy of Austrian composer Günter Rabl.

Major Works

She has been producing sheet music since 2008, which is available at LULU[16]/Online Self-Publishing Book & Ebook Company.[17]

She uses a unique method of tuning the koto, which varies depending on the piece. The apps "KotoTunings" (tuning for classical pieces) and "RedKoto" (tuning for all works by Chieko Mori) are available for purchase on the App Store (Apple).
