Cheryl Barnabe is a rheumatologist in Canada.[1] She is a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, and holds the Arthur J.E. Child Chair in Rheumatology Research.[2] In 2018, Barnabe was appointed as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases.[3][4]

Research

Barnabe's research focuses on eliminating the disparities in health outcomes for Indigenous patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other Autoimmune disease through the development and evaluation of models of care that align with the realities of Indigenous patients, and by developing tools to assist discussions between Indigenous patients and health care providers.[3][5] Previously, upon analyzing data from 11 million Alberta hospital emergency room visits between 2012 and 2017, Barnabe's research found widespread discrimination against Indigenous patients, specifically that staff consistently rated First Nations people as less urgent.[6][7]

Barnabe is one of the researchers working on a community-guided project to increase understanding surrounding health, spirituality, and well-being.[8]

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Barnabe served on a panel of experts assembled by the Canadian Rheumatology Association to develop COVID-19 vaccination recommendations for patients with autoimmune rheumatic disease.[9] Barnabe also planned Connection Circles with Katrina Fras, as a means to offer a space for Indigenous students, faculty and staff at the University of Calgary to connect.[10]

In 2014, Barnabe received a Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association.[11]
