Chen Yaochun (Chinese: 陈耀春; born January 10, 1933), male, Han nationality , ancestral home at Wenchun Town, Taishan, Guangdong Province, is a livestock expert of the People's Republic of China. He served as the Director of the Animal Husbandry Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery of the PRC, and the Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the PRC [1]。
Biography
Chen Yaochun was born into an intellectual family of Shanghai on January 10, 1933. He studied at the Affiliated Middle School of Shanghai Aurora University and Huguang High School in his youth. Due to the death of his parents and financial difficulties, he dropped out of school in 1951 and made a living by farming and raising chickens in the suburbs of Shanghai.。[2]
In 1952, he was admitted to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine at Beijing Agricultural University(later renamed China Agricultural University). After graduating in 1956, he was assigned to the "850 Farm" of the China PLA Railway Corps in Hulin, Heilongjiang, where he served as an animal husbandry technician and later as the deputy chief of the animal husbandry section.[3]
From 1960 to 1963, he was sent by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of the PRC to assist in the construction of a modern chicken farm in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolian People’s Republic, serving as the leader of the animal husbandry expert team. They designed and built the earliest and largest mechanized chicken farm and its supporting facilities aided by China for a foreign country. [4] After returning from Mongolia, he worked in the Foreign Aid Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, responsible for foreign aid for multiple countries. In 1969, he was transferred to work at the May Seventh Cadre School in Yongxiu County, Jiangxi Province.
Starting in 1975, he served as a technician at the Engineering Command of the Beijing Mechanized Chicken and Pig Farm, leading the development and participation in the construction of Beijing's modern hen production system, while breeding the "Beijing White Chicken" pure line and its supporting lines. In 1980, he went to France for training at the modern chicken farming class organized by the Agence de Coopération Technique et Industrielle (ACTIM). He transformed Beijing's poultry industry. By 1983, egg production in Beijing had increased thirteen-fold. During this period, he successively served as director of the Beijing Dongsha Breeder Chicken Farm, manager of Beijing Breeder Poultry Company, and deputy director of the Beijing Animal Husbandry Bureau.。[5]
On December 29, 1983, he was transferred to serve as deputy director of the Animal Husbandry Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery of the PRC. On September 12, 1984, he was appointed as director of the Animal Husbandry Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fishery (later as director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the PRC ). By 1985 and 1990, China's egg and meat production ranked first in the world, respectively. By 1993, China had basically met the urban residents’ demand for animal products.[6][7][8][9] Chen Yaochun is a professor-level senior livestock breeder, a member of the China Association for Science and Technology, a part-time professor at the Animal Husbandry Department of China Agricultural University, a Chinese representative of the World Association for Animal Production, a Chinese representative of the Animal Production and Health Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Chinese president of the Sino-French Animal Husbandry Association, the chairman of the Chinese Association of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicinea and the president of the Agriculture Science Association of China. In 2001, he founded the China Animal Agriculture Association, serving as its first president and honorary president.[10]
Honors
- In 1980, he won the First Prize of the Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Technological Improvement Award from the Ministry of Agriculture of the PRC for his research "Breeding and Promotion of Beijing White Chicken (Line III)".
- In 1982, he received the Contribution Award from the State Agricultural Commission and the State Scientific and Technological Commission of the PRC for his outstanding contributions in the agricultural science and technology promotion project "Modern Hen Production System and Improved Hen Breeds".
- In 1985, he was awarded the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for his project "Research, Development, and Construction of the Modern Hen Production System".
- In 1986, he won the First Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award for his research project "Breeding of the Pure Line and Supporting Lines of Beijing White Chicken".
- In 1989, he received the Order of Agricultural Merit from the Ministry of Agriculture of the French Republic.
- After retiring in 1993, he was granted a special government allowance and certificate by the State Council of the PRC.
- In 1994, he was selected for "The First Five Hundred" of the 20th Century by the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. 。[11]
