Bui Thai Bao Chau (born November 13, 1997), known as Chau Bui, is a famous Vietnamese fashionista and social media influencer. She has listed in Forbes magazine's 30 Under 30 Asia in 2021..[1][2].

Early Life

Bui Thai Bao Chau was born in 1997 in Hanoi. She was initially encouraged by her family to attend the University of Commerce and follow a career in finance like her sisters. However, after graduating from high school, Chau realized her passion for fashion and asked for her family's permission to pursue her dreams[3]. She started to work early, opening up a homemade coconut oil business and a tutoring center[4][5]. At the age of 17, she entered the modeling industry by doing lookbooks for various local fashion brands[6]. Chau Bui was not perceived as the “model type” as she was very petite. As a result, she was motivated to start training to improve her physique[7][8].

Life and Career

2015: Beginning of career

At the age of 18, she sought her parents' permission to pursue her desired career path of becoming a fashion model. She promised her parents that she would return to her studies if she did not succeed within a year. With their consent, Chau Bui started modeling for fashion brands in Hanoi. Thanks to her unique style and appearance, Chau Bui quickly became a familiar face in fashion magazines and lookbooks in Vietnam[9]. During this time, she surprised fans by revealing that she was actually only 1.58 m tall[10], despite appearing taller in photos.

2016: Seoul Fashion Week and initial recognition as a fashionista

In 2016, Chau Bui attended Seoul Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2017[11], and her image quickly gained recognition as appeared in top international fashion magazines such as Vogue (magazine)|Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, W, Highsnobiety, and The Business of Fashion. In an interview, she shared that after her appearance at Seoul Fashion Week in 2017, she was recognized by the public as a fashionista instead of just a lookbook model. That same year, Chau Bui was honored with the "New Face" award at the WeChoice Awards.

2017: Fashion Award & debut role in the movie "Em chua 18"

In April 2017, Chau Bui took on her first acting role in the movie "Em chua 18"[12] and received praise for her natural and fresh performance, although the role didn't have much acting space[13]. She also won the "Top Fashion Influencer" award at the Influence Asia Awards in Malaysia and was among the top 4 "Fashion & Breakout" influencers at the same event[14]. She was invited to join The Face Vietnam[15], a reality show for models in Vietnam but later withdrew due to personal reasons[16].

2018-2020: Becoming Vietnam's leading Fashionista

Since 2018, Chau Bui has solidified her position as one of Vietnam's top fashionistas, often sitting in the front row at luxury fashion shows such as Gucci, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel. She has also become the first Vietnamese fashionista to sign contracts with Dior and Louis Vuitton. Additionally, she became a brand ambassador for Samsung, Adidas, and Sunplay in Vietnam.

In 2017 - 2018, Chau Bui also appeared in music videos for the songs "Tu ngay em den"[17] and "Thanh xuan" by the band Da LAB, showcasing her acting skills.

In 2018, she was awarded the Young Style Innovator at the ELLE Style Awards.

2020-2021: Forbes 30 Under 30 & debut as a singer

In 2020, Chau Bui attended Paris International Fashion Week and was recognized as one of the "Top 10 Influencers on High Fashion" by Forbes France magazine[18]. She was also included in the Forbes Vietnam 30 Under 30 list in the Entertainment category[19]. At the end of 2020, she made her debut as a singer with the music video "Em la chau bau"[20], featuring TLinh and MCK[21].

In 2021, Chau Bui was listed as one of the three Vietnamese women in the Arts & Entertainment category in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia[22] list.

2021-2023: Launching chaubui.net website and returning to Fashion Week 2023

In 2021, Chau Bui launched chaubui.net[23], a platform that offers readers a broader view of her world with diverse content on fashion, lifestyle, beauty, and travels through blog posts and social media content.

In 2023, after three years of the COVID-19 epidemic, Chau Bui made her return to fashion weeks and became the fashionista with the highest total media value in the world at the Fashion Weeks Autumn-Winter 2023[24], at US$1.8 million[25]. Chau Bui actively participated in over 20 events and fashion shows during the two weeks of Milan and Paris Fashion Week Autumn-Winter 2023[26].

Chau Bui used to be in a romantic relationship with Decao, but they Breakup|broke up in 2019[27]

In 2021, there were rumors about Chau Bui dating Vietnamese rapper Binz as they were spotted traveling together in April 2021. However, they did not confirm anything about the rumors[28]. In 2022, at the Kosmik 2022 concert, Binz publicly announced his love for Chau Bui[29]

Philanthropy

COVID-19 activities

In March 2020, after attending Milan and Paris Fashion Week, Chau Bui returned to Vietnam and was isolated at a facility 40 km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City as part of the Vietnamese government's policy to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people praised her for bringing a source of positive energy and setting a good example by complying with regulations during the epidemic[30]. After completing the 14-day isolation, she re-visited the facility and brought 140 fans and 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizer as gifts[31] to encourage those who were being isolated at the facility as well as the medical staff.

Project Ambassador "No, thanks":

In March 2020, Chau Bui was the ambassador of CHANGE's "No, thanks" project with the message "Say No, Thanks to single-use plastics"[32]. As an ambassador, Chau Bui aimed to bring the message closer to the young community and encourage environmentally friendly habits to reduce plastic waste.

World's Largest Lesson Project Ambassador:

In 2019, Chau became the Ambassador of the World's Largest Lesson project, organized by AIESEC VIETNAM[33]. The project aimed to motivate Vietnamese Youth|youths to make a difference in sustainable development, focusing on raising awareness and taking action to reduce air pollution, food waste, and plastic use.

Project Ambassador "Tat Den Bat Y Tuong":

In 2021, Chau became the Ambassador of the "Tat Den Bat Y Tuong" (Lights Off - Ideas On) project[34], which aims to raise awareness among young people about environmental protection and sustainable fashion.

Sharing is Caring annual charity project:

Sharing is Caring is an annual charity project led by Chau Bui and her team[35] to raise awareness about sustainable fashion and raise funds for various charities. Chau Bui asks her followers to donate secondhand clothing and organizes garage sales[36] for meaningful fundraising campaigns while promoting sustainable use of fashion and apparel.
