Charles Otto Berger born in Rintelu, Germany, on April 15, 1847, and arrived in Honolulu in 1878 by way of San Francisco. Berger, along with Herman A. Widemann was a co-founder of the first telephone company in the Hawaiian Islands, The Hawaiian Bell Telephone, Co.[1] [2] [3] On December 30th, 1880, The Hawaiian Bell Telephone, Co. began providing telephone services to the people of Honolulu.
At the request of King Kalākaua, Berger was responsible for orchestrating and executing another first in Hawai'i's history, the very first demonstration of the electric light at Kalākaua's residence, Iolani Palace, on the night of July 21, 1886. [4] [5] This was 4 years before the White House had electric lighting. [6]
