Maltby was a student at Magdalen College School, Oxford. He was a chorister there for six years. He won numerous awards as a student, becoming the head student of the school in his final year (1908-1909). Maltby then got a minor scholarship to Worcter College, Oxford, to study Classics, where he did rowing in the college team. Maltby didn’t do well on his finals exams, scoring a fourth.[2]
Military Service
Maltby was quick to join military service when war broke out, and he became a private of the 20th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers on September 4th 1914, and after training in Oxford, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant in the 12th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade in January 1915. After six months training on Salisbury Plain, his battalion left to France on the SS Snaefell. On the 26th of August 1916, a German shell dropped into the trench by where Maltby was. He was seriously wounded, and a day later died from his injuries at the main dressing station of Dive Copse.[2]
Magdalen College School named a school house after him to mark his effort in the war.
