Charles Bonello is a Maltese politician who serves as the Secretary General of the Nationalist Party (Partit Nazzjonalista, PN) of Malta, appointed to the position in March 2025.[1]
Career
Early career
Prior to his appointment as Secretary General, Bonello served as the personal assistant to former Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
Secretary General of the Nationalist Party
Bonello was appointed as the Secretary General of the Nationalist Party in March 2025. His appointment came at a challenging time for the party, which had been in opposition for 12 years since losing power in 2013.
Appointment controversy
His appointment was not without controversy, as there were reports that two other potential candidates—Liam Sciberras and Stefan Caruana—were discouraged from running for the position. Bonello addressed these concerns by stating that it was "wiser for the role to be uncontested to avoid bruises between people in the party" given the proximity of upcoming elections. He expressed his intention to work with both Sciberras and Caruana, with the latter retaining his position as executive organisational secretary.[1]
