The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation is a professional certification mark for financial planners that is conferred by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board) in the United States, as well as by 25 other organisations affiliated with the Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), the owner of the CFP mark outside of the United States. In the United States, the CFP mark is owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

The applicant is required to complete standards including education, examination, experience, and ethics, in addition to paying a continuing certification fee, in order to be granted permission to use the designation.

When a financial planner becomes a member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment in the United Kingdom, they become eligible to sit for the CFP exam and get the CFP designation (CISI).
