Center Side Airbag (Korean language 센터 사이드 에어백) expands into the space between the driver and passenger to prevent front passengers from colliding each other.[1][2]

History

Volvo

In 1994, Volvo unveiled a side airbag. It was developed to reduce the impact of the driver's chest and buttocks in the event of a side collision by being mounted on the edge of the backrest of the front seat. Volvo's side airbags have been patented and are considered a major step forward in the history of automotive safety.

Ford

In June 2014, Ford Motor Company developed a side curtain airbag, the largest ever-size 4.67m wide and 0.9m long.[3] The airbag covers all seats in the fifth row of the interior and has a capacity of only 120 liters.

Hyundai Motor Group

Hyundai Motor Group announced its development of center side airbag on September 18, 2019. Installed inside the driver's seat, it is deployed on the instant of detecting impact. Hyundai Motor Group's center side airbag has completed the world's smallest and lightest form while maintaining safety by incorporating proprietary technology, and has obtained patents for related technologies.[4] Tether is a rope that helps the airbag support the weight of the passenger, without getting loose. Hyundai Motor Group developed a technology to simplify the design (making the airbag about 50% lighter). Accordingly, the airbag is smaller and can be installed in diverse types of vehicles.[5][6]
