Carolina Chang is a Venezuelan computer scientist, expert in artificial intelligence and machine learning. She is currently a professor at the Simón Bolívar University, where she has held several administrative positions.

Career

She is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at the Simón Bolívar University in Caracas. Since 1999 she is a member of the university's Artificial Intelligence Group.[1][2] By 2007, she was part of the university's Volunteer Fire Department. After witnessing a fire in a plant nursery and seeing that all the plants were burned, Chang had the idea of creating an "intelligent flowerpot" that could move to avoid fire. She called the robot Bioleta Mata (a wordplay that loosely translates as "Biolet Plant"). In 2008 she presented the robot at Campus Party Iberoamerica, held in El Salvador, and added contact sensors to the robot the following year.[3]

In 2012, she taught a course on Introduction to Robotics at the Emil Friedman High School, in Caracas, using Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 between January and March.[4] In 2012 she was awarded the Annual Prize of the Universidad Simón Bolívar for "her outstanding academic work" during the 2010-2011 academic period,[5] and again in 2014 for the 2012-2013 academic period.[6] She was appointed as head of the university's Lab F in 2020.[7] By 2022, she was serving as a member of the Rector's Advisory Committee.[8]
