Carlos Alberto Álvarez Aranyos (born September 25, 1980) is the founder of American Opposition, a political action committee "created to counter the rise of fascism in the United States of America."[1] He is credited with launching the anti-fascist protest moment in the United States during the second term of President Donald Trump. [2] He is also credited with launching the boycott of Tesla, for which Tesla CEO Elon Musk called him "evil."[3]
His activism is defined by his fiery speeches, which he has delivered at protests across the nation.[4]
Prior to launching American Opposition, Álvarez-Aranyos co-founded The American Sunlight Project, an effort to combat disinformation in the 2024 election cycle.[5] His keynote address to the Publisherspeak Conference in 2024, titled "Defending truth in the age of deception: The role of scholarship in the emerging information paradigm," was featured as an article in the George Washington University Journal of Ethics in Publishing.
In 2020, Álvarez-Aranyos oversaw "organization-wide communications, media relations, and strategic communications campaign to protect the election" for Protect Democracy.
Prior to joining Protect Democracy, he served as a strategic communications adviser to the Task Force for Business and Stability Operations at the United States Department of Defense under President Barack Obama.[6]
Beyond his work in politics, Álvarez-Aranyos founded Boulder Transport, a private transportation company based in Boulder, Colorado.[7] He was also an actor, writer, and producer in Hollywood under the stage name Cal Thomas.[8]
