Carl Spurlin Dekle (29 June, 1922 - 9 August, 2022) was a war veteran who served in the United States Army during World War II.

Early life

Carl was born in Palatka as the son of Carl Hershel Dekle and Sallie Dekle on June 29th, 1922.[1]. The family have moved to Lakeland when he was six. He went to school there and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1940[2]

World War II

After his graduation he worked at the Florida University for a few weeks. He was unable to get financial aid for his college education, so he joined the US. Marine Corps. He completed the boot camp at Parris Island. After boot camp he was sent to Guantanamo Bay. He was promoted to corporal in January of 1942. On January 6, 1944, he strongly contributed in the destruction of a large Japanese roadblock, for which he was awarded the Silver Star[3] Medal for Gallantry in Action. Carl received a medical discharge after Victory over Japan Day in 1945.

Life after war

After the war Carl went back to Lakeland and got married twice. He did a lot for the local community there. He took part in organizations that helped the city and the people (e.g. Lakeland Downtown Lions Club). Tried himself in finance businesses, working at JP Morgan Chase (Original name was Washington Mutual.) as a supervisor. He was also a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League.He was a christian.
