Carbon Plated Running Shoes

Carbon Plated Running Shoes are running trainers that include a thin, lightweight, rigid carbon fibre plate inserted into the midsole of the shoe. They aim to increase running efficiency by increasing the stiffness of the shoe and hence changing biomechanical factors such as ankle flexion. However, studies have been inconclusive as to whether they actually increase running economy, and it has been suggested that midsole cushioning is required in combination with a carbon plate in order to produce a beneficial effect. Different shoes and designs lead to varying changes in running economy.

History

The concept of increasing shoe stiffness, and hence change footstrike mechanics to make running more favourable,[1] by using a carbon plate has been around for many decades.[2] Brooks brought out two shoes named Fusion and Fission in 1989, and Fila also developed and sold a shoe which included a carbon fibre plate.[2][3] From the early 2000s, Adidas shoes included a similar technology called the ProPlate, however the idea was later scrapped. It was not until the release of the Nike Vaporfly 4% in 2017 that carbon fibre plate technology would become popular.[4][5]

A vaporfly prototype was distributed in secret to elite runners for product testing, which was used by several athletes in the 2016 Olympics.[4] Since then, many major shoe manufacturers have developed carbon plated running shoes.[6]
