Callie Harbin Burt is a Sociologist and Criminologist in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University. [1] Previously, Burt was a professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, Arizona State University, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. [2]
Education
Burt received her B.A., with honors, her MA, and her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Georgia. [3]
Research
Burt's research focuses on, among other things, understanding the psychosocial mechanisms through which inequalities shape development and criminal and risky behaviors over the life course. [4] Burt has explored the mechanisms through which racial discrimination experiences in childhood and adolescence increases criminal behavior among racial minority youth and how family protective factors, such as family racial socialization, buffer the criminogenic effects of interpersonal racial discrimination. [5] In other work, Burt has assessed how changes in social factors influences changes in self-control over time, contradicting Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory.[6] In 2020, Burt published an article in Feminist Criminology, called 'Scrutinizing the Equality Act: A Feminist Examination of Definitional Changes and Sociolegal Ramifications', which applauded the aims of the US Equality Act but critiqued the form from a 'gender critical' feminist perspective.[7]
Recognition
In 2014, Burt was awarded the Ruth Shonle Young Scholar Award, an award given annually by the American Society of Criminology to to recognize outstanding scholarly contributions to the discipline of criminology by someone who has received the Ph.D., MD, LL.D. or a similar graduate degree no more than five years before the year of the award.
