During the 2000s, he became a member of the Workers World Party. During this period until 2010, he was a participant in anti-imperialist events, having spoken with far-right Russian intellectual Aleksandr Dugin.[5]

Maupin was employed in an insurance company when he became involved with the Occupy Wall Street movement.[6][7] Maupin is the founder of Center for Political Innovation (CPIUSA), a think tank that aims to promote American socialism.[8] Maupin has described his activism as a form of populism and had also spoken favorably of the history of the Communist Party of the United States in the 1930s and 1940s.[5]
